He did at Memphis. It took him 3 years to remake the Memphis D from 1 of the worst in college to 1 of the better Ds.

He's taken Mizzou's defense from one of the better d's to one of the worst.

It did take him 3 seasons to do it at Memphis. Part of that was upgrading talent. Part was those players getting reps in his system.
Newcomers on D that I thought looked decent to good were; Jacobs, Palmore, Whiteside, Anderson, Ulmer and Alton. Those could be the core of a solid defense next season.

The defense will get better. It won't be great but I'm guessing middle of the East. If Heupal can make a few adjustments to the offense to help protect the defense, this team will look like a good Big 12 team.

This defense could survive with a Bobby Petrino or Brett Bielma offense that pounds the ball and eats the clock. But Huepel is not willing to do that. He's a really good offensive coach but he's not willing to change his philosophy to offset the teams weakness which is its defense. And fixing the defense mid season I don't think is enough to save Odoms job at this point.

Barry has now had more bad defenses than good ones during his time as an DC/HC. There's nothing more than optimism saying he's a good defensive coach.

Fair enough, but why cant we be successful following the Baylor, TCU model? There was a time when No One wanted any part of those teams, and they didnt know what defense was.

Because we aren't playing Big 12 football anymore? We're still playing SEC defenses.

That's what the media says, but when the 2 conferences meet on the field, that's FAR from the truth. Big 12 teams have been competitive and have won their share of games vs the mighty SEC and their defences. So there is no real reason to believe Mizzou could not be competitive.

Alabama is the difference in the 2 conferences. If Herman gets Texas going, the view on the Big 12 changes.
The bottom of the SEC is also a little better than the bottom of the Big 12.

You HAVE to play defense in the SEC! Part of our problem is, we're trying to run a Baylor style offense, and that will never work in our conference and more importantly, if .Mizzou ever has a dream of playing in the playoffs, defense rules and dominates. Yes, you have to have both, but keep this in mind. Bama beat FSU the #3 team in the country with only 269 yards of offense, and beat them by 2 touchdowns!

Um plenty of SEC teams have ran the spread successfully in the SEC. Florida and Auburn just to name two.

Florida, Auburn, Ohio State and Clemson have all won national titles with some version of a spread tempo offense.
The bigger issue has been the recruiting class right before and the 2 immediately after the switch to the SEC. although I like several of the newcomers, they shouldn't be getting as many snaps as they are. Previous recruiting misses are a big issue for the defense. The good news is that several of them could be the core of good defenses in future years.

Florida, .Auburn and others have run the spread, but not the Baylor type of spread. Nobody else is that stupid! They don't try to run a hundred plays on offense a game.

wiBO took Memphis, yes Memphis to the elites in college defense.
He messed up bad early in his head coaching by making dumb decisions. He has acknowledged he messed up. I really do think he improves the defense, I'm just not sure how long it will take. He's a smart and skilled defensive coach.

Heupel's job is the put the best offensive product on the field; it's not to fix the defense.

Yo, this was week 1.
I know I'm the only one to think this but BO will fix the defense; no we won't be top 30 nationally but he'll fix it.

The path for success for Mizzou is to win with a big offense and mediocre defense this year.
Next year 8 offensive starters return, so the offense should be really good again. Most of the defense returns as well. By my count 13 first year players played on defense. Those players with a year of experience should help the defense be better next season.
Then in 2019, when all the freshmen and sophomores are upperclassmen and the core of the defense it can be good.
The path for success for Mizzou is to win with a big offense and mediocre defense this year.
