It doesn't mean it's impossible. McElroy and McCarron got better each year as a starter.

Hurts has at best a marginal arm

There's more to a QB than just arm strength. There's also knowing the playbook better and doing a better job of reading defenses. One of Hurts biggest issues last year was not looking at the whole field but instead of starting down one receiver. That's something that can be fixed. I'm not saying Hurts is going to go from a below average passer to a 1st round pick caliber guy but instead at least improve to become a decent one.

All of what you said is true and I agree that Hurts could and should improve with respect to slowing down the game and seeing the field. I just think there are several others in the conference that I would rather have under center that possess more of a balanced skill set at that position and damn sure more upside.

Edit to add this: All of the QBs I am referring to are not on the current LSU roster. We may have a incoming freshman that can ball, but what we have now at the top spot hasn't shown he is good enough to compete against top notch defenses.

Fitz didn't play much of the USA game. the kicker, wrong QB, and defense lost that game. bookmark it Fitz wins SEC POY this season

He didn't play much because he was garbage everytime he walked on the field. His best performance was against an Ole Miss defense that even Vanderbilt throttled the week before.

If it wasn't for the Egg Bowl, nobody would even know the kid existed in college football.

All I know is the crowd saying he'll have a sophomore slump are the same guys who said Bama would lose 3 or 4 because they were starting a freshman QB. They were wrong last year so I wouldn't put too much stock or worry into what fans of other teams say.

Personally, I don't care if he's the best or in the top 5 if he leads Bama any better than last year.

Aside from Hurts, i'd take Austin Allen at Arkansas. Tough and smart.
