I know he'd been on his deathbed recently. I didn't realize he was that young though, I thought he was pushing 80

I think he had a liver transplant a few years ago.
At any rate, keith Richards just gained another year of life.
ETA. I wonder if Dickie Betts goes to the service

It had to happen eventually but it sure don't make it fair
Taking stock, that's now Duane, Oakley, Butch, and Gregg, gone.
Only original members left are Dickey and Jaimoe (unless you also count Leavell on keys).

I never knew he was once married to Cher. Far out.

Godspeed. Damn that's a loss right there.

Ramblin' Man was Dickey Betts.
I loved Dreams and Sweet Melissa most of all.
Dickey's Blue Sky was also great.
I was lucky enough to see Duane and the whole band once.

tldr:
-club owner tries to short the band on their pay, in upstate NY
-road manager (Twiggs) confronts him, stabs him, kills him
-Twiggs is arrest and put on trial for murder
-He pleads insanity based on amphetimines and "rock and roll lifestyle"
-Judge lets him off
-Allman brothers consider him as a member of the band, but record company would'nt let him pose in band pictures
-So the band puts a picture of him on the wall for this famous pic
The full story is worth the read.

The Lyndon house in Athens is named after their mother or grandmother I believe.
Grilling hot dogs and listening to Stand Back right now. What a fine tune for a fine day

And that is one of those stories that makes a legendary band a legendary band. The whole thing with duane and Oakley dying so close together, both in Macon and both in motorcycle accidents, is pretty crazy too. Not quite Skynyrd on a plane crazy but the fact that they were able to rebound as a band after Duanes death and release one of the all time great albums in Eat A Peach is just incredible.
Plus Duane left us with this quote before his passing and it is something we should all take to heart as Georgians:
"You can't help the revolution, because there's just evolution ... Every time I'm in Georgia, I eat a peach for peace ... the two-legged Georgia variety."

Grandmother. I got married there. My godfather John Lyndon was in attendance.

Well ain't that some shite
Honestly, without Capricorn and the Allmans, Macon would be just another shite kicker place in middle Georgia. Honestly, it is a shitkicker place in middle Georgia but the allmans and Capricorn give it a redeeming history. Crazy to ride around downtown and the big house and think that they knew that place, that was home. And from there, an everlasting voice of the south emerged

Well, before he helped create the Allman Brothers Band Phil Walden managed Otis Redding. Otis and Little Richard both hailed from Macon so that town has a great musical history. Still hated Macon when I lived there.

Is Twiggs the same guy Greg Allman later ratted out and got locked up to avoid going to prison himself?

They did but while their music was revolutionary and influential, it didn't carry the same people-gathering quality of the way ABB and Marshall Tucker Band and Outlaws and Elvin Bishop did in the 60s and 70s under the Capricorn label. Say what you will about jam bands nowadays but this is where it all started

I hadn't heard that story, I don't think so.

No, that was Scooter Herring who was also a road manager for Gregg. Basically, Herring was Greggs personal dealer and he was getting his supply from a much larger operation that the FBI was onto. They nailed allman to get herring and on up the ladder. IIRC allman acted as a witness or something against herring for a reduced sentence (details are a little fuzzy but it's written about plenty around the web)
