So when/why did Kentucky rip this off? Serious question though.

Stoll Field had it before Tennessee did. So technically, y'all ripped it off.

It also represents Secretariat's silks.

This has been discussed to death. I believe there is a search function. Fair warning, you're going to learn something.

Setting aside UK not being in Appalachia, it's because we're too simple for chess board patterns. Duh.

Excuse my ignorance of the geography of Kentucky but isn't Lexington is eastern Kentucky?

By region, Lexington is in the Bluegrass Region. Around the middle of the green section.

No. Lexington is in Central Kentucky. It should be the capital but that jealous city 70 miles west of here couldn't stand the thought so Frankfort was the compromise.

Easy now, I mainly look forward to July 4th because a buddy always barbeques a goat. Few things better when done right.

What date did they begin using the pattern on Stoll Field?

1930 (that we know of). The pic I posted is from 1930 and that's the earliest documented use. It's my understanding the Vols didn't start using it until late 50s/early 60s.

Good question. In all seriousness, I don't remember seeing it too much in the past. Looks like Nike might have started to incorporate the pattern in the past 9/10 years.

I believe you're right but I also think the pattern has been on Ayers Hall for much longer.

The ol' Google box says Ayers Hall was completed in 1921. It wasn't replicated on the field until later.

Gotcha. Our checkerboards were inspired by one of the most recognizable buildings on campus, Ayres Hall. It was finished in 1921. So I guess neither one of us really ripped anything off. More of a coincidence than anything.
