Newsom is entering a situation where he could take advantage of a scheme change.

From a niner fan, unless hes excellent on special teams hes not gonna stick. Malcom Smith got a pretty decent contract this year, Bowman and Foster will for sure take up two of the spots, and Newsom doesn't offer pass rush help like Eli Harold and Ahmad Brooks.

Newsom has an up hill battle for sure. That being said there are more than a couple of fit issues in the front 7 with the scheme change. Smith can play WLB but who else on the roster would you put behind him on the two deep? Armstrong?

Think there's any hope for Scherer?

I think he can play MLB in a 3-4. Asking him to make the drop on the seam in 4-3 vs NFL TEs would be asking a lot him IMO.

Heard on the radio today Scherrer is being represented by Blaine Gabbert's brother and they're having a hard time placing him because he's still not recovered enough from his knee injury.
