No we didn't. We were picked to finish 13th in the SEC Avery's first year, and he had us on the bubble in mid February. Retin blossomed under Avery, but he didn't even start in Grant's final year.

I think Avery is doing just fine, but we were in way worse shape when Bruce got here. Bruce had to sign juco and grad transfer players to even fill out the roster. Barbee left us literally nothing, except for KT Harrell.

Avery was able to recruit his first two years. But I agree, both programs are headed the right direction.

You really did tho. No talent is still better than what Bruce inherited. Bruce had to come in and immediately rebuild the roster with grad transfers and JUCO guys or we wouldn't have been able to field a team without heavily relying on walk ons. Barbee left Bruce with KT Harrell for 1 year and a bunch of players that weren't worthy of D1 scholarships.
How many players does Bama still have left from Grant? Year 2 with Pearl Auburn literally had 2 guys left from Barbee and neither started and both were trash.

B considering what hes had to work with. made mbasohan a stud in just one season.

Taylor and Norris are the only two Grant players that play significant minutes this year. I'll say Auburn was in worse shape, but Bama's roster was in pretty damn bad shape too. If we'd had Grant last season, we probably would have had single digit wins.

The roster wasn't good, but don't compare it to Auburn. Not only did you have halfway decent recruits, but they also had/have some size.

Agree. Auburns program was in shambles and their roster was a total disaster.
Grant didn't leave a ton of great players but he left a program that wasn't totally gutted out like Barbee did.

Absolutely, Grant's problem was that he was consistently NIT level talent (and results) but certainly not a disaster.
I'd grade Avery Johnson very well so far since he's infused a ton of energy and interest into the program and his teams have probably punched a bit above their weight for both of his seasons.
The real key is that he seems to be doing what Grant never could: bring in the type talent that can turn 18-12 NIT teams into a Top25 one.
The grade is really incomplete though since it'll be the next two seasons that reveal what he's going to do with some legit talent.

I'd say A-/B+ (relatively speaking of course) ... our record so far this season is better than a lot of teams we have no business having better records over. To me, that's a win for Bama hoops.

He has things going in the right direction. He knows his coaching shite. It is a matter of him getting better players and supposedly he is making that happen.
Right now the SEC is a dumpster fire as a basketball conference. Below the top 4-5 teams we are horrible.

He is not a very good basketball coach imo. Perhaps a good recruiter and ambassador...reminds me a lot of Butch Jones.

I'd give him a solid B+.
