Why do LSU fans defend Fournette with such vigor?

Let me preface this by saying I think LF7 is a fantastic RB who just happens to have played at LSU during a time of decline and coaching upheaval. Otherwise, he would have definitely been a top 10 all time back in the SEC.
However, LSU fans rush to his defense when anyone merely suggests that LF7 may not be 'all that', or that he may not be giving his all to LSU.
Is it because LSU fans really love and appreciate the guy for his contributions?
Or...is it because they have spent the last 3 years (4 counting his recruitment) pumping him up to be the greatest thing since cochon de lait and they refuse to admit he didn't live up to their expectations?
This LF7 phenomenon is strange to me.

Another Fournette thread from a Bama fan mere days away from the college football playoff

Sure he didn't win the Heisman but he performed to my expectation.
Plus from what he and his family endured during Katrina it makes you want to root for him even more so I'll push for him no matter how he performs. IMO.

Why do Alabama fans defend Alabama players with such vigor?

He had the best individual season for a LSU running back ever last year. But yeah didnt live up to expectations lol. Its unfortunate he was hurt this year.

If you think he's fantastic, how do you think they feel about him?

A better question would be: "Why do Bama fans attack Fournette with such vigor?"

LSU fans didn't create those expectations FWIW

It's this one.
No matter what anyone says he didn't live up to expectations.....now were expectations too high? That is certainly debatable.

Haven't you heard? They've moved on and now Guice is going to be the greatest of all time. They'll be defending him when he has 35 yards against Bama next year.

Same here, I have enjoyed watching him play his college career at LSU. On the other hand there were times when I thought he took plays off. I did not see out of him what people call once in a generation type player. What I saw was a gifted individual who played to protect his stock.
I also never understood why so many non LSU gave a flying frick about LF. I never understood why so many fans from other programs have tried to tarnish his career when he did not have success against their team. They act like just because the guy had a rough outing he is worthless. We have seen Peterson, McFadden, Ingram, Elliot etc.... have bad game but go own to have success after college.

I agree. Imagine if Bama fans picked a mediocre and underachieving RB and said he's one of the greatest of all time in the SEC.
I mean, that Ken Darby RB, BEST RB IN BAMA HISTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why do LSU fans defend Fournette with such vigor? by Eli Goldfinger
Simple. Because ala-shame-a fans start threads attacking the man every 1.3 seconds....
And, BTW, WHICH LSU fans "defend Fournette wich such vigor" ??????? 50-100 on one random internet message board ????? Or AAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL one million or so LSU alumni and fans around the globe ???????
You would fail miserably in the demographic marketing research business.......

Some LSU fans were saying he isn't even the best running back on the team this year.

They have to defend something...
Head coach - nope, they tried to abandon him years ago
Athletic director - not even LSU fans are that stupid
Championships - none that can be remembered
Big wins in recent years - none to be found
Louisiana fiscal health - doesn't exist
Louisiana quality of education - not now, not ever
Louisiana ranking as a scenic state - no chance
LSU softball team does well - but that would mean being proud of the coach, who is a Florida alum, so that's out
Leaves them with no choice, so Fournette becomes the man. It's a lot like Vol fans and Dobbs. They don't have anything else out there.

Why do bama fans defend bear bryant with such vigor?
The man was a mean, abusive, alcoholic, cheater. However, bama fans rush to his defense, name their children after him, tattoo his likeness all over their bodies, & worship him likes God.
