OK..I know there have been troll threads about Fournette and whatever, but I just saw that Baylor's RB is going to skip the bowl also. I know Christian McCaffrey is also doing the same. Is this usually something NFL prospects do? I don;t remember it being this common in the past.

Matt Jones sat out the bowl game.
Which led to this:

I don't think it has been common recently, but with the playoffs and sheer number of bowls it may happen more often in the future.
For a long, long time the final polls were based on the regular season, with the bowls being more or less exhibition games and rewards for a successful season. The advent of the playoffs may see a return to them being viewed in that light again.

Well Fournette basically sat out three years of playing Bama so whats one more game?

The difference is Fournette is actually injured and has reinjured his ankle twice already by playing when only at 70-80% with a high ankle sprain

I never remember this happening in large numbers before this year.
If this becomes a new trend it will be horrible for college football.
What's going to stop players from quitting mid season their final year after their team is out of contention?
Just a really crappy thing to do, looks bad for the player, bad for the teams, bad for the fans, bad for the sport.

Playoffs have taken the luster of playing in a bowl.

It doesn't seem like it would be that bad . I would prefer to have the replacements getting practice and game time over a star player that just wants to get the game over and sign with his agent .

Last year many people debated whether LF7 should sit out his junior year to avoid injury. Now he is criticized for sitting out a bowl game.
I don't like what they are doing. But I do get it. If I were in their shoes I would think long and hard about a meaningless game.
I hope this does not set a trend for the future. Players may stop playing once they are eliminated from the playoffs or from a conference championship.

If i had a chance to get 25 mill, I'd upgrade to a two story double wide.
I really don't care whether LF7 or McCaffery play. Yet, as I have watched the threads on the SECr, listened to the radio and watched the talking heads on espn et al, I have to wonder if the reaction would be the same if a "star" QB or RB, both projected high round draft picks, play, what the reaction would be if a highly projected center or left tackle decided to sit out a none playoff bowl would be.
I suspect fans would go ape-shite and sports media would universally condemn them for abandoning their teammates. I hope it happens at some point. I want to see the reaction.

It's a free country.
I don't think I can force anyone to "play", but I guess GM's can decide how important football is to a guy who chooses not to compete in scheduled game.

If you don't think their agents are calling the shots at this point you're kidding yourself

Pay the players and you wouldn't have this problem !

The average length of an NFL career for running backs is less than 3 years, and Fournette could make up to 25 mil per year.
Could you imagine sacrificing even one of those years to play and get (more) injured in a fricking consolation game? Can you imagine the impact that would have on LFs family and the rest of his life?
It's real easy to sit behind your computer and call the guy a quitter. I say he is making the smart decision.
And besides, given LFs injury, he is actually not LSUs most productive back right now. We don't need him.

Not sure about Baylor's RB or McCaffery (sp) but LF7 has $25+ million riding on getting healthy for the combine and draft. He'd be foolish to play in the bowl game.
