Georgia folks, what is the offensive line situation next year?

With a stable of backs, a seasoned and talented QB and some emerging young receivers the offense should look to take a pretty good step if the line play is better.
Is there any reason to think it will be? Second year with Pittman? Young talented guys like Cleveland stepping in?

Should be improved. We have a couple of good OLinemen coming in and some experience gained by younger players. However, they will be moving around a bit, so....not a great line...or even a good line. We are hoping for average.

Just added a 4* JUCO tackle, which should help (no more D1-AA grad transfer). Cleveland came in very raw as an offensive lineman because he played very few snaps on that side of the ball in HS, so this is a very big bowl season and off-season for him. I think the success of the OL hinges on Cleveland's progress between now and next September. If he can lock down one guard spot, then it opens up a lot of options for us and we could have a pretty good group.
We're also bringing in a top 100 OT (outside shot at another 5* OT today) and one of the top Guards in the nation, too, but I'm usually against true freshmen playing a lot of minutes along the OL. We're definitely building our talent in that position group, though.

wrong thread CockinYourRear. Reading comprehension is your friend. OP didn't ask us to describe the state of South Carolina's program.
We'll be just fine on the OL (not really) but it should be improved at least with the guys Pittman is bringing in.

Even an average line that can hold up for a few seconds in pass pro and hold serve in the run game would be enough to have a chance for big plays with the backs and Eason. Throw in the tight ends and Ridley and you've got a pretty balanced offense there if the line can be decent.

It should be better, but still won't be where it should be. People truly don't understand what we inherited coming into this year, it was a disaster of epic proportions.
For next year there are a few good things. First, our best and most seasoned OL returns in Isaiah Wynn. He's a bit undersized for tackle but in limited injury relief last year he did ok at LT (otherwise he was our LG). He will be a starter and will be solid. Our RG Gaillard is moving to center and he can't be any worse than kublanow. We have 2 RFr and 1 TFr that will battle for the guard spots, all of whom fit the mold pittman likes which he didn't have this year. We also have a gameday ready JUCO OT already signed.
The biggest question mark is who will man the other tackle spot, be it Wynn or maybe a TFR in Andrew Thomas which is definitley not the preferred outcome. The 3 interior spots should be better than last year for sure, and despite the uncertainty tackle should be as well. This year we had a dud from Rhode Island playing LT and our best OG playing out of position at RT.
We won't be an elite line by any means but should be better than this year. Combine that with all of our TEs returning, all of our RBs returning, and Eason getting another year smarter and better and we should be ok.

This season, they changed schemes twice. There was some shuffling of positions. There were some stupid penalties (looking at you Catalina). See WG's post above for better detail.
Opposing defenses overloaded the OL on everything except obvious passing downs, so alot of the perceived poor OL play was really just a numbers game, 5 guys can't block 8. That really hurt the running game.
Eason is going to have to start connecting better with his receivers downfield, getting the TE's over the middle, and receivers need to hold onto the ball. Eason needs better vision. He missed alot of wide open receivers downfield, instead passing to dump off routes when he could have scored a TD. This didn't just happen a couple of times... this happened a couple of time every game. His improvement at his position is critical.
That's going to open the running game up, and thus make the OL look better.

I hope/expect for the offense to be greatly improved with Chubb and Michel coming back. Add to that Ridley, Wims, Holloman, and Webb and we should be improved at WR. (Hearing rumors that McKenzie could be leaving....but that's all it is, right now. Rumors.)

Same as every offseason...we will win the East next year and we will have a Oline to block for Chubb and Michel and Holyfield and Herrien and Swift and Toneil Carter

With I mac gone, no proven receiver. Run game will be decent, but great tight end play. Will not win the east, but Florida game will ne competitive again

Why guard? I would think you would want him at RT with the JUCO at LT.

Most OL can play multiple spots on the line. Usually your best guy is LT (or whichever side is your QB's blind spot... most are right handed). Your second best guy is usually the RT. There are some measurables on this as well, but ultimately it's athleticism that gets you those spots in college, because they are all gigantic enough to play any of the positions. Bigger is better, but execution trumps everything else.
So.... if you can lock down a new guard coming in, that means one of your really good existing guards can move out to tackle, instead of having to recruit a tackle.
Offensive lines are a big shuffle. A change in one or two spots on the line can have huge drastic impacts in the performance of the unit as a whole.
Does all that make sense?

Cleveland could probably play RT, but his future is at guard and I think it's where he will excel. He's tall as hell, but lacks the wingspan and length of an elite tackle. Has the brute strength and size to be an elite guard.
