You should read the comments following that ridiculous article.

Adolph Rupp didn’t kiss the butts of the “elite media”. Thus, he was labeled a racist. That is, in truth, not factual. Some of the above posts were written by people who wouldn’t know a baseball from a grapefruit. Rupp played to win. He recruited whatever he thought was needed to win. If blacks didn’t come to UK, it was most likely because they didn’t want to dedicate themselves to the discipline demanded by Rupp. If that makes Rupp a racist, this country needs more racists.
This looks like something somebody's crazy Uncle would put on Facebook.

Whole lotta revisionist history bullshite in this thread about Coach Rupp.
He was a good man.
He was a good man.

I was hoping you would note the first comment:
If the story was true, why didn't it make headlines in 1972?

Have a hard time seeing much more than vindictive motives for anyone trashing someone that has been dead for 35 years.

Give me just one reason why Basett makes up this story?
What in the world does he have to gain?

That "loathsome human being" recruited the first African-American basketball player, Tom Payne, to play at UK. Before that he conducted a recruiting war with Louisville for Wesley Unseld in 1964 that would have been the first A-A in the SEC.
Just looked this guy up.
Talk about a low character individual. Had a bad temper during games, and is a repeat rapist who is currently in prison.
Yikes, that is unfortunate that he had to be the first African American to play at Kentuckcy.

A payment from the New York Times?
Why did he wait 35 years to "break the story?"

That Payne was a serial rapist is an interesting side story but it has no relevance to the issue at hand.

Huh?So the NY Times tracks down a player 35 years later so they can get him a check so he can make up racist stories about Adolph Rupp?
Makes a TON of sense.

Who says it was the Times that initiated it? Maybe it was Bassett seeking a buyer. Sports Illustrated and ESPN had been busy trying to destroy Coach Rupp's legacy since the 1980s.
Northern news media trying to destroy successful southern programs was a very popular effort for the decades of the '80s, '90s and early 2000s. Surely you remember that.
