... today.
Today we will find out just how much progress this team has made this year. We'll find out just how much potential this coaching staff has. We'll find out just how lacking in talent we are, or are not.
Today we'll make a statement to recruits and prospects, one way or the other. Today we'll either have ammo to use on the recruiting trail, or they'll have ammo to use against us.
Today we either give the taterheads something to seriously worry about, or we give them a reason to take a deep breath and relax.
10 big things today ... the check list.
1 - no major injuries.
2 - run the ball.
3 - stop the run.
4 - convert 3rd downs
5 - overcome the crowd - withstand the big plays and momentum shifters
6 - play well in all aspects of special teams
7 - win the turnover battle
8 - win the coaching (decision making) battle
9 - win the physicality battle
10 - win the game

Great post. I agree with the third paragraph especially. A good friend of mine who is a Clem grad said something very similar -- they aren't worried about us... yet. A win in the Swamp would change that.
We need to prove that we can go on the road in a fairly hostile environment and take care of business. One of the points I agreed with the most was the one about being able to get over the big play. I've been to the Swamp five or six times, and in the years we have won, esp 2010, we have been able to get over those. That place only gets intimidating when it has reason to.

Agree with your points.
I have no doubt that Muschamp will out coach McElwain. The talent gap is where I worry

Overcoming that KO return for a TD was huge. They got dominated for the rest of the game

I've been to a lot of games down there over the years. Ten of our games I think ... more all-together though because I lived in Mt Dora for awhile and dated a big Gator booster who had me going to games with her through most of 95-96.
So I know that place pretty well.
It's like The Cock Pit. If you let them make big plays and get momentum going the crowd can be a factor. If you keep it close and weather the storm they'll quiet down a bit.
Early games there are like everywhere else, the crowd is not drunk so it's not nearly as rowdy.
BTW ... we're in garnet helmets, white jerseys and white pants today.

1 - no major injuries.
Failed. Dowdle went down in a game we had no shot of coming back in and it looked serious
2 - run the ball.
Failed
3 - stop the run.
Failed
4 - convert 3rd downs
Failed
5 - overcome the crowd - withstand the big plays and momentum shifters
Failed
6 - play well in all aspects of special teams
Failed
7 - win the turnover battle
Failed if you count the 4th down
8 - win the coaching (decision making) battle
Failed. Roper made it look like forest gump was calling our plays and UF's play caller had us off balance from the start
9 - win the physicality battle
Failed. Corey Helms should quit football and their 3rd stringers on the offensive line were pushing our guys around like a JV squad
10 - win the game
LOL we are lucky the final score was 50-0

We won't win vs. any good teams as long as we have retards like Roper and Elliott coaching our offense. Both of these clowns will be lucky to get jobs as a position coach for any FBS school by the time Muschamp fires them in 3-4 years.

Hard to call a good game when the line can't protect the QB. I put this on Elliot.

I disagree on Roper, he was handcuffed on play calls today. That OLine is worse than 5 wet paperbags. Elliot has got to go, zone blocking is a thing of the past, bodies on bodies and push them out the way is the way to go.

The difference of talent in both lines was astounding, on the verge of difficult to watch. I can see why we have in the ballpark of 5 OL in this years class.

2nd half adjustments were good. Our defense can keep us in games. Our OL played like dogshit again. Too many dropped passes by WRs and TEs. Bentley was on the mark most of the throws. We have to do something different on OL, the direction we are going with that aspect isnt improving.

Agreed.
I pretty much said the same thing in the game thread.
I'm also disappointed in hurst's blocking. On a side note I feel like deebo or Cosby lays out for that last pass in the end zone whereas hurst just stretched for it. Don't think it matters in the overall outcome of the game but was curious to see what looked like a lack of effort to me.

If Edwards catches that pass, I really think things would have been different. Yes, we got dominated on both LOS, but that play was one of those swing plays that could have changed the whole complexity of the game.

This: I claim ignorance on zone blocking techniques - I see other teams that profess to utilize zone blocking that block much better than we do, and they aren't necessarily stocked on elite OL talent either.
But I've watched our OL over this season and in past seasons: they engage DL for something like 1-2 seconds and then stop. The plays are still progressing, and in many cases the ball is still in our backfield. So those OL wind up standing and watching the DL that they were just engaging making backfield tackles and QB sacks.
And it wasn't because our OL were manhandled....it wasn't because they stumbled or was juked by a shifty DE. They just stop with the play still active. All the times I see other OLs blocking and engaging not only to the whistle, but PAST the whistle that it aggravates the DL. But our OL stops. Why??
And on other plays - mostly run plays - I see a OL run through the LOS ahead of the RB who apparently is supposed to run behind him. The OL runs through and keeps running: he lets this opposing guy go past him, lets that opposing guy go past. Like he thinks HE has the ball, and HE'S the one rushing up field for the big gain. The plays end up with him turning around and watching one of the opposing players that he ran past making the tackle on our RB. He never engages anyone. Why?
From the little I can gather, the zone read blocking schemes call for OL to block zones or areas, instead of saying, "I got this guy, you take that guy".
And I can understand that, but so often I've seen during the years under Elliot, where our OL will guard an area and let an opponent (or two) go past him, when if he has his eyes open, he should know that the only opponent in his area to engage was the guy he just let go past him. So he ends up like in the other examples: having no one to engage, then turning around to watch the defender he just let go past him make the tackle for loss or sack.
When the questions are asked afterwards - "why didn't he block the guy?" - the answers are always, "he says he didn't see the guy". But there was no one else TO see. Does he block with his eyes closed? If it's blocking a zone or area, then aren't you supposed to pick up the first opponent who invades your zone? I mean, I don't expect our OL to pick up everyone, but at least pick up SOMEONE, and live with the decision.
Coming into the UF game today, USC was dead last in the SEC - and easily so - in tackles for loss allowed and in QB sacks allowed. 115th nationally in both categories, out of 128 FBS teams.
Whatever we're trying to do with the OL, it just ain't working.....

Agreed Conway
Cockopotamus ... let's reassess after sleeping on it.
1 - no major injuries.
Looks like we may have escaped with no major injuries.
2 - run the ball.
We failed at this. Knowing what we know about our OLine I wish we would quit trying to run between the tackles on short down every time.
3 - stop the run.
We failed ... way too many missed tackles.
4 - convert 3rd downs
We failed ... too many between the tackles runs, too many dropped passes.
5 - overcome the crowd - withstand the big plays and momentum shifters
Well ... we never quit, never gave up.
6 - play well in all aspects of special teams
We failed in all aspects of return game and return game coverage.
7 - win the turnover battle
Technically we won this aspect of the plan ... but failed to capitalize.
8 - win the coaching (decision making) battle
It appeared that our game plan was sound, for the most part ... but we failed to execute.
9 - win the physicality battle
We failed that one for sure IMHO.
10 - win the game
Failed
