The Aggies' defense is better, no doubt. But it isn't elite.

TAM opponents are scoring at 83% of their average.

That's a decent number but not great.

Bama opponents, for example, are scoring at 48% of their average.

I think Chavis is a good D.C. But the new OC is the reason their defense appears better this year. They have a running game and allow the defense to rest finally and not collapse in the 4th quarter.
