It was clear since late last year that McIlwain's mom didn't like that Bentley was coming in the same class as her son. Pretty sure she voiced her thoughts in a very similar manner on Facebook back then, too.

You can't argue with her main point. The only time Brandon was in the game with all three of our main receiving threats; Deebo, Edwards, and Hurst, was the first half of Vandy. It does make a difference, but on the flipside, Orth threw the ball around against A&M in the 4th when BMac had not done it all game.
Exactly

Competition is healthy, IMO. If BMac is truly the QB of the future, then he will beat out Bentley any way.
Also, no true football fan is going to put much stock into the passing stats against UMass. I told a buddy of mine earlier today, the UMass game is a confidence booster, but we will really see what JB is made of if he starts against Tennessee.

With everything that we have heard so far, even if Bentley does redshirt, it is very likely he would be the starter next year.
As far as I'm concerned, Bentley should still be in high school right now, getting another year of playing experience and development in. I understand that he's had issues learning our offense, but if he is the type of QB that can come in and turn our entire season around as a True Fr, he would've already been playing by now. If he is head-and-shoulders above McIlwain talent-wise, our coaching staff would've put him in at some point when we've been nothing but stagnant on offense.
Unless Bentley is Deshaun Watson-esque, I don't see how starting him is better for our season with the OL issues that we have going on right now. Even Lamar Jackson would struggle with our OL. Will Bentley benefit from playing time for next season? Absolutely, but so does McIlwain, who has had to play behind our abortion of an OL all season. If we can fix our OL issues this upcoming offseason, I'll feel better knowing that we'll have a returning starter in McIlwain having to compete against a stud like Bentley.
The only thing that, in my mind, will justify Bentley starting on Saturday is that if McIlwain has undeniably regressed in practice throughout recent weeks. If there is no way he can even beat out Perry Orth for the starting role, then he should sit. I just haven't heard if that's the case.

I haven't read the article yet but I do find it ironic that this melt was in response to an article entitled "DON'T give up on Brandon McIlwain."

While that's true let's remember some things. The stat about UMass is false number one. The give up closer to 250/game. Number two Kentucky gave up 277 yards through the air to NMSU the week before our game, 100 more than we got. They did that throwing the ball just 4 more times. We've only had 2 passing TDs all season, one was 4 yards and one was completed 5 yards down field and Turner took it to the house. Mom bias is real. Thought the article was fair.

If Brandon is so good at throwing the ball downfield then why does he ignore open receivers over the middle of the field to throw towards the sideline, run for a minimal gain or hold the ball and get sacked?
She can bitch all she wants about Deebo and Edwards being hurt but it's been clear McIlwain has been scared to throw the ball down the field.
She also threw a similar bitch fit on facebook when Bentley reclassified. She needs to write this shite in her diary instead of posting it on facebook

There is a solution to all of this y'all know ... right?
Start BMac, if he does not produce yank him for Bentley.
If he does produce keep the redshirt on Bentley and roll with it the rest of the year.
Just sayin' ... would that surprise anyone?

We definitely have to try something. We are too stagnant and predictable on offense.

I won't be surprised if this is what happens. I'm not sure if the depth chart is updated throughout the season but just checked it on GCC and it has the QB position as OR and OR. I'm not sure that it is any different that what it has been though...
But to your point, I believe this weekend will be BMac's last chance this season as starter. Either produce and play, or don't produce and hold a clip board. He will be against what should be an inferior opponent with all weapons around him and the OL as healthy as it has been since Vandy.

Here's my prediction: BMac Starts, and if he underperforms, Bentley goes in. I don't like it, but I think that's what will happen.

Here's my predition: IF BMac Starts, and if he under-performs... against UMASS, he never takes another snap as QB.

I'm ready for Bentley. We're going to recruit a stud QB for '18's class, so I'm not worried about what's going to happen 5 years from now with that particular situation.
If Bentley is the guy, great. If BMac is the guy, great. Whoever moves the chains the most gets my vote.

Yeah now that I reread my post I wanted to point out that I have nothing against BMac. Think he's a great kid, works hard, loves this team. The speed is just too much for him now. It could absolutely be too much for Bentley as well. But we don't know that yet, it has been confirmed for BMac.

Welp, that answers that.
