A Purdue Take on Etling. Might be of interest.

Look, I'm not ready to crown Etling and as long as Miles keeps a death grip around his 1974 offense, LSU isn't going to do much. But, there has been a lot of talk about what we have in Etling either good or bad. I saw this and thought it might be of interest for those who really do want to size up what they might be facing at LSU from the QB position later in the year.
The jury is still out, obviously. But, apparently, he didn't leave Purdue because he was horrible. It was the fact that Purdue was horrible that caused him to leave. Or so this Purdue homer says:

The good news for them is that Etling is legitimately talented.
This like the ultimate test in believing that a team needs a good quarterback or a quarterback needs a good team. Personally, I think any quarterback can look excellent with the right team around him. Look at Ken Dorsey. He struggled to do anything in the NFL, but in college he posted an absurd 38-2 record as a starter. The team he had around him was so talented pretty much anyone could have won games. I am pretty sure a legally dead person could have won playing quarterback in a few of those blowouts.
That’s where Etling comes in. Etling was a 4-star recruit and he was thrown into a horrible situation. As a true freshman he had to play behind an offensive line that would have had to improve to be putrid. Purdue gave up 38 sacks that season and had less than no running game. Most of the time he was running for his life almost at the moment of the snap.
The second factor was the infamous John Shoop. Shoop burned through three quarterbacks before we finally fired him. Multiple people have said his offensive philosophy was needlessly complicated and I tend to agree. Etling might be talented, but you had him playing behind that offensive line trying to run a complicated offense with no real running game and of course you’re going to struggle. If Drew Brees magically came back and played on that team he too would have struggled.

Does this mean that LSU will be good with Etling? No. Les Miles is still there. But, apparently, he is a wild card who could improve the QB play over the course of the season. While I don't think that LSU will win the West, they could become a dangerous foe week in and week out, which is a far cry from preseason expectations, but a pain in the tail for the rest of the SEC.
We'll see what happens.

Purdue's loss... Drew brees 2.0

I'm not saying that and you look kind of ridiculous assuming I am.
I have no idea what he will do. I've seen him play once. But, it is an interesting take that might have some bearing on how the SEC race plays out.
I'm not sunshine pumping and legitimately expect the worst at this point.

Brandon Harris beat him out.
Let that sink in.

Harris beat him out before he even transferred.

Based on what I saw in the 2nd quarter against Jacksonville State, I don't see how he's not on the forefront of the Heisman race.

Brandon Harris was going to be the starting QB no matter what. He won the job last year and played well enough as a sophomore to keep it.
By game 2, Etling beat him out. So, there are multiple ways to look at it.

I don't even know who Etling is? Is he a recruit or transfer you all are trying to get? Is Brandon not working out?

This was from a Purdue fan. Take it for what it's worth. I added in enough qualifiers so that people with basic reading comprehension can understand that this is just one perspective. Believe what you want. We'll know soon enough, I guess.

If it wasn't for Fournette being on his team, he'd be the SEC OPOY.

Is that really what you think I'm saying or is this a poor attempt at sarcasm?
Oh, yeah, sarcasm.

I know that it's impossible to have an actual football discussion here, but it really sounds like your problem is with what the Purdue fan said. Since he isn't biased for or against Etling, nor should he be, I thought it might add to the discussion.
Take it how you like.

In 2014 , Brandon Harris made a comeback against State and led LSU fans believe he was the " Messiah ". Fast Forward to 2016, Etling came in against a FCS powerhouse and went 6 for 14 with 100 yds, 1td, 1int. They call him " Savior ". Mississippi State is to Etling as Auburn is to Harris. See the trend?

You must have been trying to respond to someone else and made a mistake. I'm not saying any of that and was really clear.
Do you just have like one response only?

Can you imagine what would have happened if Miles sat Harris and this kid came in and crapped the bed?
They would still be having to shop vac the Cajun slobber out of Lambeau!

He had two touchdowns.
This biggest thing I saw with Etling is that he actually communicates with the guys around him and scans the field while dropped back for a pass. He actually works the pocket instead of taking 10 step drops and rolling out.
Most of his incomplete passes were drops or timing routes that will come with time working with the starters.
Here is a play that didn't show up in the stat book because of a penalty:
I really liked what he did in the throw to Jeter that got called back. Moves out of the pocket, tucks the ball as he runs to avoid the rush, and then pulls up and throws a dart to Jeter. Jeter is a tight end. Brandon Harris doesn't know that the tight end is pass eligable.
