Is Little Rock a shithole or a nice clean city?

I have family in West Little Rock and love the area. The Chenal area is gorgeous. Once you head into NLR and cross the river though, different story. I would live there in a heartbeat. Affordable COL and it may only be second to LA in terms of outdoorsman's paradise in the south. You're also within 6 hours of Dallas, OKC, Tulsa, KC, STL, Memphis, Nashville, BR/NOLA.

There are so many cool little spots on River Market Ave and in that area down by the capital bldg that used to be a war zone 20+ years ago.
In some ways, it reminded me a lot of the recent Cleveland art and restaurant Renaissance. There are 15-20 little places that should make an appearance on like a food network show or something. And we did a lot of walking in small groups all over that area and I always felt pretty safe. Again, it's a complete 180 from what I experienced in the early 2000's and mid to late 90's.

I now love it. I live about a mile from the Chenal Valley area and its pretty much Mandeville with a mountainy terrain. Wouldn't mind staying here after. West Little rock is beautiful and super clean.

Can't say they're wrong about the improvement. I almost feel safe driving through Jacksonville and Levy at night these days.

It's both just like any metro. Having lived in both nwa and lr (because I know it's going there), for a considerable amount of time, I can tell you that nwa and central Arkansas have positives and negatives. Little Rock's micro brew scene is insane right now; they're simply brewing better beer. Also in LR, your dollar will go twice as far renting. In NWA, crime is an afterthought. Plus it's very walkable and prettier in my opinion.
I prefer NWA, but the seeming protectionism of an identity they've obviously co-opted from Austin is boggling to me.

Like any large city of it's size and bigger, it has a lot of both. Just have to know which is where.

I've said it before and I'll say it again-I like Little Rock and NWA having lived in both places (Fayetteville in college and LR/NLR in more recent years). NWA has come a long way and it's no longer just about the You of A but is truly a growing metro area with so much to offer. Little Rock, with its westward expansion over many years, also has much to offer. I don't worry too much about the bad places because I don't often go there (at least not at night) and in my line of work I often have to visit the worst places (not all in LR though) and deal with some of the worst people so I'm somewhat immune to it. Granted, I'm not going jogging in the early morning hours in the vicinity of 18th & Pine as part of some social experiment, but just a little common sense goes a long way when you travel about the city.
And even the City of Colleges, where this troll (?) post originates, has really grown into a neat place with lots to offer, annoying roundabouts notwithstanding. Hey, the new courthouse is pretty nice and I like the baseball fields, too.

Holy frick this again? Just like any city or depends on where you are or where you go. Some places are really nice some aren't.
