quote:

Before leaving LSU in December 2014, Chavis told people that LSU’s treatment of Miles — and the “Les Miles clause” — was a sign the school planned to fire the coach in the same unceremonious fashion Tennessee fired Fulmer in 2008. The "Les Miles clause" ties assistants to Miles. If he is fired or resigns, LSU staff members’ contracts won’t be fully honored. A similar clause appeared in the contracts of Tennessee assistants — including Chavis, then UT’s defensive coordinator.

The second Les wins 5 games with multiple top 10 recruiting classes on the roster, then this may be true.

I liked this nugget:

quote:

Alleva admitted in December that he “looked at options” and made “inquiries” regarding a potential new football coach last fall

so why didn't he pull the trigger on the change? 3 logical possibilities:

1) fan support for Les was just too overwhelming
2) optics would have been horrible given condition of the state's budget (even tho LSU Ath Dept could have covered the expense of dropping Les fairly easily)
3) the most likely - he looked and realized he wasn't getting that big fish replacement he wanted so just decided to wait a year and see what happens

The article explains that they didn't fire Les because LSU is broke.

They took a stab at getting Jimbo and failed. Alleva is well aware that replacing Miles with anyone other than a big name is likely going to result in him getting fired.

You don't replace someone like Miles with an unknown. The Fulmer comparison is quite appropriate in more ways than one.

It's a nice story that'll generate a lot of compassion for Chavis in the public eye, but Chavis was looking out for himself. Just rewatch the bowl game against ND. No way he even pretended to care about that game.
