Your gut feeling...who will start at QB?

The position is more unsettled than it has been the last couple of years. I'd like to see either Barnett or Hurts get the nod, but it'll probably be Bateman.

Batman the beginning.....

We all love the potential of the two freshmen. With that said, we will be better off if Bateman can win the job. He has valuable experience and has been in the program entering four years now. He has to lose his fear of pulling it and running for the first down if he wants to maximize his potential. If our quarterback doesn't produce with our wide receivers then it will be an absolute travesty.

Gut is Bateman. I personally hope Barnett. One thing that Saban does that I think he could improve on, is doing whatever it takes on speeding up the QB competition. Maybe bring in a group of NFL guys to help advise during July and August and name a starter 2-3 weeks before USC.

All I can see in my head is the fear in his eyes vs Ole Miss. I don't think "better off" are the right words... Honestly at this point, I hope Bateman can just help Barnett grasp the playbook and give home some mental pointers on schemes. Bateman has way too many weaknesses.

Bateman worries the hell out of me. I'll go with Barnett

Why does Bateman worry you?

Go back and watch the first half of Ole Miss.
Go watch his PT against the cupcakes. Pick six, interceptions, and no deep ball at all.
I believe his longest pass all season might have been 20 yards.
He has been bragged on by talk of his athleticism and speed, yet has he even ran the ball once?
I think Barnett will shine in the summer and will have the team behind him by August.

I think it'll be Bateman but I really hope Barnett wins it

Gut feeling....Bateman, who I want to start Barnett or Hurts.

My gut...and my fear...is that it will be Bateman and he will cost us at least one game before the switch is made.
I certainly don't pretend to know more than Saban and Kiffin, but if Phil Savage's assessment about long balls "coming apart" on him is accurate, he has no business starting if that isn't corrected, if Barnett is better, no matter how long Bateman has been in the system.
And I don't have a personal preference. I just want the best QB out there...and nothing I have seen or read leads me to believe it's Bateman...actually, the opposite.

He has to learn how to throw an accurate deep ball as well

This. All of it.

I guess I'm more bullish on Bateman than most. He's certainly capable of throwing a nice deep ball as evidenced by the 60+ yarder he completed in high school for a game-winning TD. I think he's got the necessary accuracy to operate our short passing game which is what we relied upon for both Sim's and Coker's first several starts. He's had several years of being conditioned by CNS's don't-turn-the-ball-over emphasis. There'll still be mistakes but I expect he'll grow as the season progresses and CLK will playcall to take advantage of his strengths and mask his weaknesses.
And I don't remember him being that bad last year. There's a reason the QB competition went several games into the season. In fact, I remember some thinking CB outplayed JC in the opener.
ETA: I'm not aware of any pick 6's. He threw 2 picks last year. The one against MTSU was a bad decision near the goal line similar to the one on A-day which is a concern. The one against Ole Miss looks like a cross up between him and Stewart on a deep ball. Coker had similar cross-ups with Stewart on deep balls before we switched to featuting Ridley on deep passes

Lol no staff in the country can drag out a QB competition like Bama's
I know Saban likes to keep opponents guessing but it will come down to which guy can run the offense and make the fewest mistakes.

If Bateman starts, I'll really start to question the MO with the QBs.
We haven't turned the keys over to a sophomore since Kiffin arrived.

Does it really matter as long as we keep winning?
