Senior Maurice Smith, who was in the mix to be the Tide's starting nickel back, is leaving and will join another program as a graduate transfer, according to a source.

Definitely didn't see that coming.

OTOH, we're down to 85.

Was he really going to be a starter?

I've always liked Mo but honestly I think we'll be fine. I don't think he'd be transferring if he felt he was inline for a lot of minutes. I wish him luck.

He was going to leave after the Clemson game but decided to see how spring would go. Now that Anthony Averett likely going to be the corner next to Hump. That put's Fitz back at Nickel where Smith would play. Harrison had already beat Smith out at safety and Brown is the backup for Fitz and Harrison. Not to mention all the new kids. It wasn't looking good for Smith.

Kid is doing his best to turn up the heat to force a release. Too bad. You tell your coach you quit, you should clean out your locker THAT SAME DAY.

Does Kirby hold some responsibility for this Mo Smith decision? Has he been working behind the scenes to get Smith and making a bigger mess of the situation?
