re: Fun Jalen Hurts hypothetical

Where is the "fun" in speculating about getting rid of a kid that chose UA - entered early, worked his arse off to get the start, earns SEC Rookie of the Year honors and comes within 1 second of winning the CFBCG? Where in the Hell do you people come from?

It's a way of asking whether you think there are 5 better QBs in college football in 2017 than Jalen Hurts. A lot of folks have been critical of him and I was wondering if they thought there were 5 better QBs in 2017.

I don't believe you took this as a dig at Jalen, but I hope your phony outrage makes you feel better about yourself.

I'll take your answer as "no, you wouldn't make the trade".

Fun Jalen Hurts hypothetical

On Alabama's behalf, you are offered the chance to trade Jalen Hurts for one 2017 college-eligible quarterback with the following condition:
- You choose any of the best 5 2017 college QBs (Lamar Jackson, Baker Mayfield, etc.).
- A knowledgeable Bama-hatin fan (Jim Harbaugh or Danny Kanell, say) gets to choose from one of those 5. That QB replaces Hurts in the trade.

Do you make the trade? If yes, who are your 5 QBs?
Great gif of Bama defenders destroying Fournette.

Waiting for OP to retaliate by posting gifs of Fournette trucking Bama defenders.

Could be a long wait.

Just realized that there are only 2 players left from Bama's number 1 ranked 2013 recruiting class. Averett and Falkins.

Rob Foster and Brad Bozeman are also in this class.

Foster is likely gone and it wouldn't surprise me if Falkins isn't on the roster next season.

That would still leave only 2: Averett and Bozeman.
Not specifically about Trevon but you'll know him better if you read the article: Inside My Second Season - Stefon Diggs

So much for insiders knowing what was going to happen

All you can reasonably ask of Boz and the other folks who see what we can't is to tell us what they see. I really appreciate Boz taking the time.

Saban explained what is holding Hurts back for now:
quote:

"What you have to be really concerned about is, is a guy ready to go out there and not just do things that he can do but can he run the offensive team?" Saban said. "The back's lined up on the wrong side. Is he going to put him on the right side? Is he going to be able to point out the protection right so we can pick up the blitz?"

There's no way Boz can see that at a practice and unless your inside info comes from Kiffin or the QB coach, your source may not be good at evaluating this.

At any rate, thanks Boz and everyone else to gave us 2nd-hand observations.

if you would have seen Hurts it would be a no brainier. He is absolutely electric. It's hard to describe how cool he was in the pocket, no panic.

Most of the praise of Hurts concerns his skill after the ball is snapped.

I've read that Saban cares almost as much what a qb does before the snap in terms of
- getting the call right
- getting folks lined up
- quickly fixing it when guys line up wrong

Do you have any insight into how Hurts has progressed in his before-the-snap duties?
1972 Orange Bowl. Nebraska beat Alabama 38-6 for the National Championship.

The game wasn't that close. Devaney called off the dogs at halftime.

While later (infrequent) losses during the 70s were heartbreaking, the knowledge that a "great" Alabama team could be so thoroughly dominated in every phase of the game was traumatic to me as a young fan.

Definitely didn't see that coming.

OTOH, we're down to 85.

What happened to Walker Jones? I thought he was still at MLB

I don't have a link but I think I read he hung it up because of chronic injuries. I could be wrong.

At any rate, he's no longer on the roster and didn't participate in Spring drills.

specifically the 85. With Allen, Jackson, and Howard all coming back and the transfer WR, I was curious how many we got and if anybody else is going to be asked to pursue other opportunities.

Right now, we have 89.

We were at 64 pre-signing day 64. Walker Jones is out and Christian Bell is in. .

We signed 25 (some already on campus) so 4 of the 89 will not be there sometime in August.

If Coatney or someone else signs, we'll be 5 over.

Great thread!

So many great memories, thanks to everyone!
I'm not smart enough to argue whether Sims or Coker is the better quarterback. You can make a great argument for Sims.

But I'm old enough (58) to tell you that Coker will be remembered as a national championship quarterback. To this day, I can rattle off the Bama championship quarterbacks since 1961. I'll bet most Bama fans my age can do the same.

Not saying it's right or fair, but Coker's big plays from the playoffs will be replayed for decades and his mistakes will be largely forgotten.
