Hey fellas. Headn to KC next week and I'm a bit of a BBQ snob. Never been to KC before and was wondering if y'all had any solid places to some good Q in? I'm spoiled by Memphis Q, so hope I won't be disappointed.

OK Joe's and BB Lawnside were my favorites. Get the beans at OK Joe's

Don't go anywhere that looks like a steakhouse or a chilis. For example, Jack Stack. The JOCO suburbanites up there like their bbq joints a little more posh than those in the South. If it's near a mall or an airport, don't even bother
The run down shacks near the actual city limits of Kansas City, MO are your best bet

JOES KC (formerly OK Joes) was my favorite when I lived there. They smoke everything and the sauce is really good. One order of fries can feed 3 adults. There is usually a line out of the door, but it goes fast. Jack Stack is a little overrated and it's a "classy" sit down and order joint, but they have the best sauce I have ever had. They sell it there at the restaurant.

Yeah I like what I see with Joes. I'm staying downtown so doesn't look too far. I just hate getting my hopes up on some places. Went to the Bama game this season and all the gumps I work with said u HAVE to go to dreamland. Worst Q I've ever had. Sauce was solid, but just got my hopes too high. I've never been to rendezvous in Memphis because of hype like that.

I'm a bbq snob myself snd love rendezvous. It was terrific and worth the ridiculous wait to get in.

Really? Only reason I haven't is the locals typically send me elsewhere.

For KC, if you DO happen to go to Jack Stack, the Lamb tips are awesome. I've been to a few of the Gates BBQ locations there and liked it ok. My wife and I are moving to Columbia soon so we will get to try some more BBQ spots in St Louis and KC.
I checked out Rendezvous recently and was disappointed with the ribs. The meat on the ribs was gray, and came out to be $18-20 for a half rack, beans, and another side. It's possible that it was just a bad rack. Everyone loves the meat and cheese app there. Someone else in my family got the chicken and it wasn't bad. I recommend the BBQ Shop to my friends over Central, Corky's, and Interstate. I've smoked a few racks of ribs on the Kamado Joe using the BBQ Shop seasoning/sauce and they have turned out fantastic. I've heard some people say that their favorite is Cozy Corner, but most locals prefer Central.

I liked it thought the meat was really well done. With that said if you got a bad rack it would be extra disappointin and I don't know if it's the best Memphis has to offer. I did enjoy it quite a lot though.
Definitely on par with or better than all the best competition bbq I've had.

Okla, where do you try out competition bbq? I did go to BBB one year and had a great time trying out the different competitors' bbq. Other than that its basically just restaurants or my own. Have you ever had anything smoked out of a ceramic grill (big green egg, kamado joe, etc)?
Also, if anyone has St Louis recommendations I'd appreciate it.

Bikes blues and bbq always has good stuff, my hometown does a kc bbq contest qualifier I got to judge one year. Also have some family friends that are big into it and go to contests hook it up a couple of times.

Now I'm in nyc tbough so bbq is few and far in between although I've found some good ones.
I would kill for a rack of ribs that was worth a damn up here.

Had a friend buy one and it certainly passed the eye inspection when he cooked it. Just saw the Facebook post though so can't confirm anything else.
Personally I prefer smoker cooked with a good ole fashioned hickory and maybe a little mesquite thrown in the mix. Doubt the ceramics would persuade me away from that.

Kansas City Joe's as a lot of others have said. The other place that is pretty much tops as far as KC locals who are into Q are concerned is Q39. A lot of people decry it as "yuppie BBQ" but the quality cannot be argued against.

ETA: Oh, and Joe's and Q39

You can still mix in several chunks with the lump charcoal, just like you would in an offset smoker. The advantage that the offset smoker has over ceramic during cooks is that you don't have to take everything (meat, grates, and heat plate) off the grill to add logs/chunks once the earlier ones burn up. I like using hickory and applewood chunks.

It is awesome to see a lot of the custom built smokers that different places have. Rendezvous is at the base of a somewhat tall building, and you can see the smoke exiting from a pipe at the roof.

Go get burnt ends at LC's.
Also Arthur Bryant's is a necessity just for the setting and its right by the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, which is worth your time.
