Wait, what? When was this ever an expectation for them with Bama, LSU, and Auburn on the same side of the conference as them?

Most posters on here expected us to win 5-6 games a year in football

No. Aggies were told it would be at least 5-10 years to get up to an SEC level of play.

From a strategic standpoint, the weird SEC rules regarding recruiting have been a double-edged sword for Texas A&M.
1) The SEC doesn't allow non-graduate transfers without at least 2 years of eligibility.
2) The SEC doesn't allow online credits for certain courses. This cut-off A&M's access to Blinn (Cam Newton) and other JUCO programs. A&M lost the commitment of several great linebackers, defensive tackles, and at least 1 elite running back (Marion Grice) that would have probably changed the school's fate over the last couple years. A&M has worked closely with Blinn to fix this issue and has just recently reopened that "pipeline" last year (Jake Hubenak and Damion Ratley).
3) The SEC doesn't allow "satellite" camps or teams to play off-campus during the Spring. All 11 D1 football teams in the state plus numerous out of state schools can run camps in TX, but A&M cannot. They also weren't allowed to have a Spring game for the last 2 years, because of this weird SEC rule. All of this limits the coaches exposure to players in their own state.
4) Oversigning! The SEC changed the rules right as A&M and MIZZOU entered the conference. A&M was able to sign one large class in 2013, but it has been unable to field a full 85 man roster since entering the league. A&M has essentially been playing as if it had been sanctioned by the NCAA ever since it joined the league.
The year 2017 will be the first year in which all SEC teams will have an "even" playing field due to the over signing rule that was put in place in 2012. Don't be surprised if we see a push for a rule change by 2018.
