well damn, i expected some downvotes or snarky remarks or total bitchouts for my comment and i got nothing.
i didn't mean it, just wanted to play opposite person from everyone else. it seems to work well for pigfeet, etc but i guess no one takes me seriously.

Yeah, the only concern about making hires that are a little too qualified is that they don't tend to stay around very long. If we can keep this guy two or three years it'll have been a successful outing.

If he leaves after one year, very likely, then Bielema will hire another one. It's a position coach, not a long tenured position for any coach worth a damn.

This is a very good hire in terms of a position coach, David Sims was a good one that came out of that program.
All of your big time programs have been revolving doors for the most part and the trend lately has been bringing in former head coaches to programs on the cusp or definite contenders.

Will he be groomed to replace Robb Smith when schools come calling?

That is probably the nicest thing about this hire. Bert gets a first hand look at him if Smith leaves or gets fired down the road. Would be surprised if Rhoads is here for more than 2 years maybe even one if the secondary plays well.

Offer letter to new Ark DBs coach Paul Rhoads is $350K for 2016 and a non-compete clause with SEC schools (except for HC or DC jobs)

Also glad for Paul but I could never root for a BB coached team. The way he kicked Walden when he was down was as classless as it gets.
quote:
Suddenly the burly Bielema, who had seven tackles in the game, came from behind Fry, a Frank Broyles protégé, and confronted Walden.
“I don’t know if he said ‘I’ve enjoyed kicking your arse for four years or today,’ but he said he enjoyed kicking my arse,” Walden says from his home in Washington. “It shocked me. I was out in the middle of the field shooting the bull with Hayden, and he was telling me good game, and that my kids played hard. Then, this football player comes over his right shoulder and says something like that. It startled me. I had never seen anything like that. That was the only time that ever happened to me.”
Walden says Fry’s eyes “got big as saucers,” as a horde of media watched on. “I told [Bielema], ‘Son, I’m glad you enjoyed it.’

I don't look at it that way. I tend to think outside the box a bit...
To me, this screams of Bert being prepared for a possible departure of our current DC Smith.
If Smith has a good season next year, the NFL could certainly be a possibility for him again.
Rhoads is a proven DC and will likely be here for two years, IMO. This gives Bert a leg up if Smith was to get a better offer with a good season.

Think outside the box or make stuff up? Unless you have sources that have spoken to you about this you are wildly speculating
Also your basis that Rhodes will be here long term is... that he will replace another coach who will have left after a short tenure

If he's here longer than a year, what will you do as penance for being a glass half empty hog?
Posted on 2/24/16 at 3:44 pm to hawgfaninc
he wouldn't do penance- just start bitching about something else or missouri since he's obsessed with them.

At least none of Mike's assistant's leave after each season.

Sources aren't needed to see the potential with this hire. Only an idiot would be so narrow minded and not understand how some of these things work.
Nobody is saying Smith is leaving right away, but Coordinators don't want to be coordinators their entire coaching career. Especially a coordinator with NFL experience. Of in Enos' case, a coordinator who has head coaching experience.

Also your basis that Rhodes will be here long term is...
I said if he is here longer than two years. Rhoads is going to be a hot commodity when head coaching vacancies come open. Which is what you want with coaches on your staff.
quote:
that he will replace another coach who will have left after a short tenure
Would you rather have coaches that nobody wants? If we have a staff full of coaches nobody else wants, then something is wrong.
Petrino had coaches nobody wanted because they were yes men. Nutt had coaches nobody wanted because they all sucked. Ford had coaches nobody wanted because they weren't very good.
Its part of it. It is why you see coaches leaving OU, LSU, Alabama, Ohio State, and other big time programs every season.
Sources aren't needed to simply be smart enough to figure out how many ways this hire could potentially help our staff on down the road. Sources, don't replace brain cells.
