quote:I think I actually probably agree with that. He's still completely inept in there, still can't catch an entry pass or rebound to save his life, but there have been some stretches of late where we've actually gotten a bit of production out of him in there in key moments. And he definitely seems to have progressed passing the ball as you said.
Taylor's best stretch on the offensive end, in my opinion, has been the last month or so.
I really like Jimmie as a guy. Always plays hard. You can tell he cares a lot. But if we are honestly having a serious conversation about Anthony Grant's ability to develop post players, and Jimmie fricking Taylor is the best example you can come up with, well...lol. Case closed.

quote:Well I mean Grant wasn't his coach anymore so
the 4 or 5 games he averaged 9 points a game towards the end of the year or whatever you're talking about, carried over to this year.

The best stretch of Taylor's career was late last February and March. He definitely developed under Grant.
His best stretch has been this year, especially on the offensive end. He could barely dribble the ball last year. He actually has some nice post moves now.

quote:Or maybe he wasn't actually as good as you're saying at the end of last year, just got a few more easy buckets than usual.
Maybe he's just one of those players who comes alive later in the year, gives you hope that he's turned the corner, and regresses over the off-season for some weird reason only to improve again at the end of the year.
He's certainly no worse this year than he was last year.

Very good and accurate summary. Basically the same points I was trying to make earlier in the thread, just expressed more eloquently. I agree with just about all of it.
Thanks. I hadn't even read through the thread til now and see you had already posted most of the points.
However, they do bear repeating as there always tends to be a lot of Alabama fans in these threads criticizing Grant for things he actually did well and always some Florida fans trying to blame anyone but Grant for his lack of success.

Starting to get the impression you're trolling.

And I agree with most of that. But the idea that Grant can't develop players when he was one of the keys in developing our B2B team makes me laugh.
He's pretty much Frank Martin without the temper from an in-game perspective imo. The biggest difference between the two is that Martin has been able to retain his players more effectively.

Grant was a terrible head coach at Alabama. Nobody cares what he did as an assistant at Florida.

I suppose it is a pretty small "sample size" in the amount of bigs he actually had at Alabama.
However, if his development (and maybe more importantly whoever on the staff was specializing there) wasn't really the problem then scouting which bigs to recruit (or bring in a JC transfers) certainly was.

Yeah, I really like him too but I agree that he's extremely limited.

Then again, Taylor and Hall are probably the two best in-state big men recruits Alabama has produced in recent history. Except for Haas, but he didn't have any real SEC offers.

Developing players in college goes far beyond just getting guys to the next level it is maximizing and utilizing their full potential to win some damn games. Grant failed at that more often then not.
This is from one of DraftExpress' main college scout:
quote:
Super impressive win for Bama. Not sure any staff has done more with less than Avery Johnson and his staff.
That is developing players. Seeing what Retin, Norris, etc.are turning in to under his coaching is an absolute joy to watch.
Grant is a damn good assistant, hence why Billy hired again, but he just wasn't cut out for the Bama job. I hope he learns from it and from his time in OKC to become a good HC because he is awesome person.
You are just reaching a lot in this thread.

If he gets the ball deep enough, he can finish, but anything else, and hes basically useless on offense. Very stiff, limited arsenal of post moves and no midrange game whatsoever.
I think the biggest issue with Jimmie though is his hands. It's why he's not a very good rebounder and why we struggle to get him the ball at times; bc he literally struggles catching the basketball. Him being in position for rebounds, only to slap at them and see them fall to an opponent, has been a constant fixture on our teams the past few years.
Still, really tough player who plays hard, and he's great on the defensive end when he stays out of foul trouble. Glad to have him on the team.
We saw some signs of it last night but I think Hall will end up being the rebounding presence on the inside that we all hoped Taylor would be. More bounce, better hands.

I think he's backing off from his original comments. Anyone who thinks firing Grant was the wrong decision is a lunatic

If anything we waited too long to fire him

I wasn't a fan of the Avery hire because I was never a fan of him at Dallas, but he's done a pretty good job so far.
That doesn't mean Grant couldn't be successful elsewhere with slightly better luck.
