Taylor is still a disaster on the offensive end, putting it nicely.

I think saying Grant didn't develop players is absurd. Sure, there were players who didn't improve, but tell me that Releford, Randolph, Obasohan Taylor, etc. didn't improve under him.
I can easily tell you those players improved very little. Releford finally developed a bit of a 3 point shot his senior year. Randolph did the same. Obasohan didn't really improve much until this year. Taylor didn't improve at all until this year. I'll go as far as to say none of our post players improved because of Grant.

Taylor definitely improved late last year
Hale is one of those guys who is never going to develop regardless of coaching imo
No, he didnt. At least not on the offensive end.
Hale just can't stay healthy for longer than 2 weeks at a time.

if you are taking up for Grant while he was at Alabama, you are terribly misinformed
take it from all of us who suffered through all the games and PIPE DOWN

This guy REALLY wants Grant to have been a good head coach. We could make the sweet sixteen this season and he'd still act like hiring Avery Johnson was a bad decision and we should have kept Grant.

Anthony Grant was terrible at halftime adjustments as well. I can't tell you how many times Bama was up 10 at halftime only to lose by 10-15 under Grant. Could not keep a second half lead for shite!
And under Gottfried it was like Bama was one team at home which usually meant good play and a totally different one on the road which usually meant absolutely horrible play.

No halftime lead under Gottfried was safe, either.

Lol yeah I watched 99% of the games from the Grant era. Only time I didn't watch a game was if I was in school or gone with no access to a tv. I know how u feel, Grant was terrible. People need to stop taking up for him.

In six years, Anthony Grant beat 3 ranked teams.
In four months, Avery Johnson has beat 4 ranked teams.

we're a lot better this year, no doubt ... but grant didn't set the program back any ... he finished 2nd in the reg season twice ...
I'm going to preface this by saying I liked Grant a lot BUT.....
The program mostly tread water during his tenure, but it was about to sink like a stone. I'm going to disagree with Genro's assertion that he couldn't recruit. For most of his tenure he recruited pretty well but he couldn't keep them at all.
Trevor Lacey
Tony Mitchell
Charles Hankerson
Nick Jacobs
Devonte Pollard
Ben Eblen
Algie Key
Moussa Gueye
Carl Engstrom
All transferred out or otherwise left the program before either using all their eligibility or getting drafted by the NBA. Several of them became significant contributors at their new school. When you're having as many quit as you lose to graduation every single off season, you've got to look in the mirror for the source of the problem. You're either making very bad choices in who you offer or you're failing as a coach. Either way, it is on you.
For the first few seasons, Grant was able to restock and there was little production drop off but the writing was on the wall. While I love their effort, his last class could in no way be considered anything other than disappointing and the class prior wasn't that much better. Couple that with his unwillingness to sell the program and the corresponding lack of fan interest set the table for the house of cards to come crashing down.
Grant didn't end up cratering the program for one sole reason - Bill Battle fired him before he had the chance.
Edited to add: And monkeys flinging poo at the playbook would have been more successful in calling plays with the game on the line than Grant was.

Alabama fans tend to be a bit harsh about Grant and often add some criticism that's not warranted.
However, he was unsuccessful there due as much to his own shortcomings as any type of "bad luck" that any coach doesn't deal with.
He failed because:
1) he simply didn't recruit to the level necessary (or the level to which every Alabama coach before him was able to) especially in regard to big men.
2) given his lack of recruiting any top big men, his inability to hire someone to "coach up" the "projects" he brought in was even more glaring
3) He simply wasn't a good offensive coach. Constant confusion, players seeming nervous and very reluctant to shoot when open was evident to the point that it made our eyes bleed.
4) This is a lesser criticism but one that is important for a program like Alabama that has a decent but not elite basketball history and support: every year saw him create even less energy around the program than the one before.
Those were certainly more than enough reasons to replace him and areas where Avery Johnson seems to be excelling beyond the most optimistic expectations so far.
However, that's a far as I would go in criticizing Grant since he did these things very well:
1) His teams played hard for him and aside from some problems here and there with certain players (I would guess over the stagnant offense) were very resilient.
2) Grant was an excellent defensive coach and his teams were probably a downright nightmare for opponents when he had the athletic talent and deeper bench like his first couple of seasons to press.
3) He's about as likable person as you'd ever want to meet --which was a welcome change from Gottfried-- and I assume any Alabama fan that was ever around him for even a short time genuinely wishes him the absolute best.

Very good and accurate summary. Basically the same points I was trying to make earlier in the thread, just expressed more eloquently. I agree with just about all of it.

The best stretch of Taylor's career was late last February and March. He definitely developed under Grant.
Posted on 2/11/16 at 2:51 pm to GatorsGators
Taylor's best stretch on the offensive end, in my opinion, has been the last month or so.
He's still not really that polished but he's finally beginning to show some signs of
1) looking like he knows what he want to do as soon as he catches the ball whether it's set up his man for the little hook shot or try to drive him
2) actually moves the ball to the right option at the right time when passing out of double teams a lot more often
I'm not even really arguing whether Grant, Johnson or Taylor himself deserves credit for this as it's kind of past time for some improvement.
Grant's problems with having any sort of winning play on the offensive end from his bigs goes well beyond just Taylor.

Yeah he totally developed bro. You definitely follow the team more closely than the chorus of bama fans disagreeing with you in this thread.
Would have been nice if some of that development, the 4 or 5 games he averaged 9 points a game towards the end of the year or whatever you're talking about, carried over to this year.

He was pretty bad in January. He's been better over the past two weeks, sure. But last March was easily his most productive stretch.
Maybe he's just one of those players who comes alive later in the year, gives you hope that he's turned the corner, and regresses over the off-season for some weird reason only to improve again at the end of the year.
