Baron Browning, 5-star linebacker, Kennedale, Texas

Browning visited Tuscaloosa for the Texas A&M game last month, and Alabama did make up some ground in his recruitment. I was told by a source that it’s looking like an Alabama-Ohio State-Texas race, with the Longhorns fading a bit.

If that’s the case, Alabama is squarely in the hunt for the 5-star prospect, but his official visit to Ohio State on Nov. 26, just three days prior to his scheduled commitment, is what puts the Buckeyes over the top in my opinion.

Smith also was at the Texas A&M game and is coming back to Tuscaloosa for an official visit for the Mississippi State game. He also was in attendance for the Tennessee game in Knoxville, where the Tide crushed the perceived favorite in his recruitment.

His sister works in the recruiting office for Butch Jones, and there’s just no way I see him going anywhere other than Tennessee. His relationship with his sister is too tight for me to see him in Alabama’s class.

Alabama has commitments from two highly ranked tackles in this class in 5-star Alex Leatherwood and the nation’s No. 1 junior college prospect, Elliot Baker.

Isaiah Wilson, 5-star offensive tackle, Brooklyn, N.Y.

It’s an Alabama-Michigan race for Wilson, and the Wolverines appear to have the edge at the moment. The Crimson Tide were considered the team to beat this summer, but the Wolverines have seized some of that momentum as of late. He’s also closest with Michigan assistant Tyrone Wheatley.

He’ll take an official visit to Michigan on Nov. 15 before making his way to Tuscaloosa for the Iron Bowl.

I think we land Wilson FWIW.

Gibbs took an official visit to Alabama for the Texas A&M game, but the family connections he has to Georgia and Tennessee are, in my opinion, what separates those schools to the top. He has one cousin at each school. He’s also visited Athens and Knoxville much more frequently than Tuscaloosa.

Jedrick Wills, 4-star offensive tackle, Lafayette, Ky.

Wills looked like he was going to be an Alabama commit this summer. He tweeted back in July that fans should expect an announcement in two weeks. Three months later and Wills is still uncommitted.

His interest in the Crimson Tide remains high, but I’ve been told that Alabama’s decision to recruit him at guard is a sticking point. He wants to play tackle in college.

Michigan has momentum here and he also remains very high on Notre Dame.

I'm sure Harbaugh is negatively recruiting the hell out of us by hammering home to Jedrick that we want him to play Guard.

Devon Hunter, 4-star safety, Chesapeake, Va.

Safety is a big need for Alabama in this year’s class, but I don’t see Hunter filling a spot. He recently released his top 5, and Alabama made the cut along with Auburn, Florida, Virginia Tech and North Carolina.

I think Alabama is fifth on his list. He has not visited Tuscaloosa much, though he is expected to take an official visit for the Iron Bowl. Florida and Virginia Tech are the favorites here.

Hunter has also said he will take an unofficial visit to Alabama as well. Two visits before NSD can't hurt. I like him more than the other Safeties left out there.

Aubrey Solomon, 4-star defensive tackle, Leesburg, Ga.

Solomon’s mother likes Alabama a lot, and that’s a major deal in his recruitment. After an abrupt commitment to Michigan, Solomon told SEC Country that his mother is going to have a much bigger say in his next commitment.

Solomon’s mother is in the military and the major reason why she likes Alabama is Nick Saban’s discipline and how he runs his program. Ultimately, though, Georgia has the advantage for Solomon because it has done the best job recruiting him and his mother. The Bulldogs have prioritized family with the Solomons more than Alabama.

I hope he is wrong on this one.

Nico Collins, 4-star WR, Pinson, Ala.

Collins seemed like a lock for Alabama ever since he picked up an offer in 10th grade. That drastically changed in the past several months as he started taking visits outside of Tuscaloosa. Michigan and Georgia now look like teams to beat for the state of Alabama’s No. 3 prospect.

SEC Country has been told through various sources that Collins would like to leave Alabama for college.

I have a proposition for Georgia fans. They can have Nico Collins and we'll take Aubrey Solomon. Sounds like a good deal to me.

SEC Country did a Mock Class for half of the conference yesterday. Here a couple prospects they predicted to other schools that are relevant to us:

Auburn - Ryan Johnson, Isaiah Buggs
Arkansas - None
Florida - None
LSU - Cam Akers, Isaiah Buggs, Devonta Smith, Dylan Moses, Chris Allen and Todd Harris
South Carolina - Javon Kinlaw
Tennessee - Trey Smith

LEESBURG, Ga. — Growing up in a family filled with members who have served in the military, Tuesday afternoon was a special moment for 5-star defensive tackle Aubrey Solomon.

The 6’3”, 304-pounder from Lee County High School in Leesburg was officially presented his jersey for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl—which will be played on Jan. 7, 2017 in San Antonio.

Solomon admits he’s grown up watching the all-star game that has seen prominent alums such as Adrian Peterson, Andrew Luck and Odell Beckham Jr. star in past years.

“It means a lot coming from a military family,” Solomon told Bleacher Report. “That’s all we know really. My mom, both of my uncles and my grandpa were in the military. It’s just a big honor for me. Growing up and seeing how this game came up, it feels like I was just watching the game on TV. For me to now be in it, I’m still in shock. It’s just a blessing.”

Solomon, who rates as the nation’s No. 2 defensive tackle and No. 20 player overall in the 2017 cycle, also vividly remembers the moment he knew he had a future in the game of football.

“It had to be my freshman year. It was the last regular-season game that year when we played Bainbridge,” Solomon said. “I had like eight tackles and that’s not common for a defensive tackle, especially for a freshman. That’s when I thought to myself, ‘I think I could do this on the next level. I don’t care where I go, but I know I can play on the next level.’ That’s when it just hit me.”

The Peach State defender was once committed to Michigan before backing off that pledge in August.

However, Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh is still pushing hard to land him. His efforts appear to be paying off.

“Actually, I’m going up to Michigan on Friday,” Solomon said. “I’m leaving Friday night or Saturday morning after my game to go up there for my first official visit.”

Aside from the Wolverines getting the job done on defense this year, one other critical factor about Harbaugh's program has his attention.

“The thing about Michigan is their great academic reputation,” he said. “You could be set 10, 20 or 30 years down the road with a degree from there. I love football. Don’t get me wrong. But, it ends at some point for everybody. Football won’t be there forever. At some point, you have to grow up and I know I will have to have a career after sports and do something with my life.”

He also has a few other destinations in mind that he’d like to get to in the coming weeks and months.

“I plan on going to Oregon, USC and hopefully Alabama and Clemson. I may want to see a few more places too,” Solomon said while also confirming that visits to those four programs would be officials.

Home-state power Georgia is another school that has been in the mix with him dating back to his freshman year—which is something that carries a significant amount of weight with him.

“When I was in the ninth grade, Georgia sent the first coach to come talk to me,” Solomon recalled. “That was a big blessing that I didn’t expect. I was in awe. Because we have a separate ninth-grade campus from the high school and he just came to see me. It was [defensive line coach] Tracy Rocker. So for me, it’s about loyalty. They believed in me early on.”

He noted that the Bulldogs, along with Oregon, are the two schools pushing the hardest for him at the moment.

Solomon, who reports a 2.6 GPA with tentative plans on majoring in sports medicine or medicine in general, has two things he is looking for when it comes to identifying the school he eventually chooses.

“Education and you have to make my mom happy. [She wants to see] a good academic program. If a school wows me with their academic plan for me, then they got me,” he said.

As for when a final decision could come, he admits he isn’t in any hurry and plans to take his time with the process.

“I haven’t thought of when I will make my decision. I’m just taking things day by day.”

Each year, AL.com does a preseason A-List.

We make updates after the season and even more into the recruiting process leading up to National Signing Day. Season success combined with recruiting recognition (major offers) are among factors that go into selecting this list.

Big risers include Lee-Montgomery standout receiver Henry Ruggs III and Jackson-Olin linebacker T.D. Moultry, who moved from No. 10 and No. 11, respectively, to near the top.

Oxford linebacker K.J. Britt and Spanish Fort linebacker Thomas Johnston are new additions to the A-List. They replace Will Ignont of Buckhorn and Spanish Fort's Justin Thomas.

Here is the updated AL.com A-List following the regular season.

1. LaBryan Ray, DE, James Clemens

The preseason No. 1 did nothing to dispel that notion this year. He had 69 tackles (37 solos, 32 assists), 19 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, 13 QB hurries, four pass deflections and a blocked punt that he scooped for a touchdown. Ray is uncommitted, as Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, Florida and other SEC schools are finalists.

2. Henry Ruggs III, WR, Lee-Montgomery

Ruggs shredded 7A defenses and has power 5 schools drooling. He accounted for 20 touchdowns on 102 touches for the Generals in nine games. Ruggs had 38 catches for 639 yards and nine touchdowns, 36 carries for 446 yards and seven scores, seven kickoff returns for 352 yards and a touchdown and, force into quarterback duty late, went 11 of 23 for 186 yards and three touchdowns.

Alabama, Auburn, Penn State, Florida State and Florida are his top five.

3. Tadarian "T.D." Moultry, LB, Jackson-Olin

Like Ruggs, Moultry didn't get on the scene until his junior year. The Auburn commit has immense talent, leading the Mustangs to an 8-2 record and a trip to the playoffs for the first time in 17 years. He had 125 total tackles (64 solo, 61 assists), nine for loss, five sacks, five pressures, two forced fumbles and two pass breakups.

4. Nico Collins, WR, Clay-Chalkville

The 6-foot-5 Collins caught 43 passes for 865 yards and nine touchdowns despite playing with first-year starting quarterbacks. Michigan, Georgia, Alabama, LSU and Florida State are all slated to get official visits.

5. Markail Benton, LB, Central-Phenix City

The Alabama commit was a dominant force at middle linebacker for a team that won Class 7A, Region 2, and showed well in camps and combines.

6. Kendall Randolph, OL, Bob Jones

The Alabama commit plays best as the competition ramps up, showing well against top prospect LaBryan Ray when the Patriots beat James Clemens earlier this season.

7. Brian Robinson, RB, Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa

The Alabama commit had 990 yards and 18 touchdowns rushing with 302 yards and two receiving touchdowns. Bear in mind he didn't play in many second halves due to Hillcrest blowouts.

8. Ryan Johnson, DE, St. Paul's

Johnson was a force at defensive end for the Saints and had to also play middle linebacker out of necessity. Alabama, Auburn, Stanford, LSU and many other top schools are still after the four-star recruit.

9. Austin Troxell, OL, Madison Academy

The Auburn commit is a top-notch prospect at tackle, but unfortunately missed most of the season with his second ACL tear in as many seasons.

10. Kenney "K.J." Britt, LB, Oxford

The recent Auburn commit is a big reason that Oxford is 10-0 going to the playoffs. Georgia, Stanford, Ole Miss and many others were hot on the trail for the speedy 6-foot, 230-pound middle linebacker.

11. Alaric Williams, RB/ATH, Southside-Gadsden

The Auburn commit Williams missed a few games with a knee injury. He was on another level prior to the injury and still pretty good after the fact. His size and physicality helped him earn numerous SEC offers early in high school. He committed to Auburn before his junior year.

12. Malcolm Askew, ATH, McAdory

Askew, an Auburn commit, didn't get a chance to shine much in the position he'll play mostly in college - defensive back - but he's one of the most versatile players in the state as shown in camps and showed great leadership at quarterback for an 8-2 team that came closest to knocking off No. 1 Hillcrest.

13. Chadarius Townsend, ATH, Tanner

The longtime Alabama commit had a big season for the Rattlers and would be a fun player to watch at a higher level. He'll get that chance as SEC schools like Florida are still pushing for a visit. He's played both ways for Tanner and blocked a punt.

14. Neil Farrell, DL, Murphy

The LSU commit was a force this year with 85 tackles as a defensive lineman - 25 for a loss with 12 sacks. He's one of the best higher-ranked prospects people aren't talking enough about.

15. Thomas Johnston, LB, Spanish Fort

Johnston needs four tackles to set the AHSAA career record. This season, he has 142 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, a forced fumble, a sack, a blocked punt, and three pass break-ups this season. He listed Arkansas, Arizona State, Iowa, LSU, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Michigan State as his top schools recently, and UAB should also be a factor here.

Saturday will be big day for Alabama and LSU as they square off in Tiger Stadium at 7 p.m. on CBS.

There will be several key recruits in attendance. LSU will have a new head coach next season or could promote interim Ed Orgeron, but it's likely some assistants will stay on board.

Here's a list of 2017 recruits who the schools are battling for or have battled for.

Devonta Smith, WR, Amite, La. - The elite four-star receiver is thought to be an Alabama lean but has made trips to LSU and it's going to go down until Signing Day. He was scheduled to commit in August and it likely would have been Alabama, but he pushed back his decision with respect to people who were affected by the floods

Dylan Moses, LB, Baton Rouge, La. (IMG Academy) - The five-star recruit is committed to Alabama. He made an unofficial visit to an LSU game, but followed that up with a trip to Alabama for the Texas A&M game. He seems solid to Alabama, but LSU won't stop recruiting the elite talent.

Nico Collins, WR, Clay-Chalkville - Out-of-state schools are being mentioned more than Alabama, including Michigan, but Collins plans a December official visit to LSU. He'll likely officially visit Alabama in January.

Phidarian Mathis, DL, Neville, La. - The four-star defensive lineman is high on Alabama after a recent trip to Tuscaloosa, but it looks like an Alabama-LSU battle

Christopher Allen, LB, Baton Rouge, La. - Alabama has to feel good about its chances for Allen despite him being in Baton Rouge. At one point, he publicly said Alabama was his leader. He has backed off that stance somewhat, but Alabama has a good chance to get Allen

Todd Harris, DB, Plaquemine, La. - LSU may be trending more, but Alabama's in the mix for the four-star safety who earned an Alabama offer after a camp performance

JaCoby Stvens, DB, Murfreesboro, Tenn. - The five-star safety is committed to LSU but Alabama was likely runner-up when he announced. Since then, Les Miles was fired and Alabama could have a shot depending on who the new head coach is

Marvin Wilson, DL, Bellaire, Texas - The five-star is one of the country's top prospects and while schools like LSU and Texas are mentioned more prominently, Alabama is still in the race

Travis Etienne, RB, Jennings, La. - This is probably a name to watch if Alabama loses a running back commit or wants to take a third back. Alabama offered the four-star several months ago and likes his talent.

Tyler Shelvin, DL, Lafayette, La. - The longtime four-star LSU commit likes Alabama, but its chances of flipping Shelvin probably were lost when Bo Davis resigned. Shelvin told AL.com at The Opening that while he likes Alabama, it will be hard to get him to flip

Isaiah Buggs, DL, Mississippi Gulf Coast - Buggs has a more wide-open stance in recruiting after originally having a top four of Alabama, LSU, Auburn and Ole Miss, but look for these schools to remain in the mix as Alabama needs impact defensive linemen in this class

Cam Akers, RB, Clinton, Miss. - The five-star had to reschedule his Alabama official visit. LSU is in the mix with Michigan and a host of other big-time programs

Alex Leatherwood, OL, Pensacola, Fla. - The five-star Alabama commit has made unofficial visits to LSU but is solid with the Crimson Tide

Justin Thomas, DL, Spanish Fort - The Alabama legacy earned an early offer from the Crimson Tide but LSU pushed harder and got a commitment

Edward Ingram, OL, DeSoto, Texas - Many were surprised when the four-star offensive guard committed to LSU over Alabama in the spring

There’s more confirmation that Central-Phenix City senior and Alabama commit Markail Benton is one of the nation’s elite high school linebackers.

Benton is one of 15 semifinalists for the high school Butkus Award, which was announced today. Benton was one of five Alabama linebackers on the initial list of 51 linebackers on the preseason watch list for the high school Butkus Award. The others nominees from Alabama were Murphy’s Kendric Haynes, Buckhorn’s Will Ignont, Spanish Fort’s Thomas Johnston and Oxford’s K.J. Britt.

Benton committed to Alabama earlier in June and has also been selected to play in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic and the Under Armour All-American Game.

Here’s a look at all of the high school Butkus semifinalists:

Markail Benton, Central-Phenix City

Baron Browning, Kennedale, Texas

VanDarius Cowan, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Levi Draper, Collinsville, Okla.

Hunter Echols, Cathedral, Los Angeles, Calif.

Justin Foster, Crest, Shelby, N.C.

Willie Gay, Starkville, Miss.

Anthony Hines, Plano East, Texas

Bruce Jordan-Swilling, Brother Martin, New Orleans, La.

Nate McBride, Vidalia, Ga.

Dylan Moses, IMG Academy, Bradenton, Fla.

Jarez Parks, Sebastian River, Fla.

Jacob Phillips,East Nashville Magnet, Nashville, Tenn.

Jaelan Phillips, East Valley, Redlands, Calif.

Top-ranked Alabama travels to Tiger Stadium on Saturday to take on No. 15 LSU in what has become one of the biggest games annually on the college football stage.

The game has deep meaning in terms of the Crimson Tide’s attempt to repeat as national champions and as LSU looks to keep its playoff hopes alive and, perhaps more significant, determine its next head coach.

Besides the on-the-field battle, LSU and Alabama find themselves in tight battles for a number of the nation’s top remaining 2017 recruits. Here’s a look at some of the elite prospects who are deciding between the Tigers and Tide — plus our take from LSU recruiting writer Sam Spiegelman and Alabama recruiting writer Chris Kirschner.

DeVonta Smith

Position: 4-star WR

Hometown: Amite, La.

LSU take: Smith is Louisiana’s top prospect, so nabbing him is a priority. LSU entered the mix once Dameyune Craig was added to the staff. The team gained steam after opening up the offense in recent weeks. The elite wide receiver visited Tiger Stadium for the Ole Miss win and will be on hand for the Saturday night tilt against ‘Bama. LSU quietly is generating momentum with Smith as his commitment on National Signing Day nears, though the Tide long have been considered the front-runners. However, if LSU continues to make strides on offense, then it will only improve its chances of adding one of the nation’s top playmakers. – Spiegelman

Alabama take: When Smith de-committed from Georgia in January, Alabama was deemed the team to beat because of his connections to the school. Assistant director of player personnel Sam Petitto was a mentor to Smith when he was a child. Petitto got his coaching start at Amite High School. Defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt was one of Smith’s primary recruiters. Wide receivers coach Billy Napier has gotten close with Smith, and freshman defensive back Shyheim Carter is one of Smith’s best friends. He’s one of the biggest locks for Alabama’s class. No source I’ve talked to on the Tide side of things is worried one bit about losing one of the nation’s top receivers. – Kirschner

Todd Harris

Position: 4-star DB

Hometown: Plaquemine, La.

LSU take: LSU holds commitments from two of the nation’s premier safeties — Grant Delpit and JaCoby Stevens — but continues to save room in the 2017 class for Harris. Louisiana’s top-ranked defensive back maintains a strong bond with secondary coach Corey Raymond, who has visited the highly touted safety and been a regular in Death Valley for multiple games this fall. Harris is set to commit at the Under Armour All-America Game and decide between LSU, Alabama, Ole Miss and Texas A&M. There are plenty of reasons to be confident that Harris stays in The Boot. LSU has a major need at safety, with Rickey Jefferson set to graduate and Jamal Adams likely to the NFL. Harris represents the future of the LSU secondary.

Alabama take: Safety is one of Alabama’s biggest needs in the Class of 2017, and Harris is near the top of the Tide’s wish list. As Sam mentioned, LSU has two commitments from two of the nation’s best safeties. Alabama has none, and Harris knows that. He recently told me this when it comes to his thoughts on LSU’s depth at safety: “I still feel like I am a top target for (LSU), but if they don’t get me, they do have two solid safety commitments already, so I don’t think they’re too worried.” That’s surely an interesting quote.

Christopher Allen

Position: 4-star LB

Hometown: Baton Rouge, La.

LSU take: Alabama long had been the leader for Allen, one of the country’s top edge rushers, but LSU began to garner momentum after Bradley Dale Peveto stepped in as his primary recruiter. That occurred during the summer when Allen made another trip to nearby LSU for prospect camp. He’s since returned for multiple games this fall. The 4-star prospect is being courted as an inside backer on early downs, then an outside backer in passing situations. Allen, who has spent much of his life in Baton Rouge, named LSU and ‘Bama his co-leaders, with a decision expected on Signing Day. Allen is a priority recruit at a major position of need for the Tigers and a must-get in this class.

Alabama take: I’ve talked to a source very close to Allen lately who told me that despite the talented linebacker naming Alabama and LSU his co-leaders, the Tide hold the lead in his recruitment. Allen told SEC Country recently that out of all the coaches he communicates with, he’s closest to Alabama outside linebackers coach Tosh Lupoi, who has made Allen one of his top priorities. Even if LSU’s staff stays put heading into 2017, Alabama is the team to beat here.
