If any of you recently lived in dorms or have children who did, please post the pros and cons of the various dorms at UGA. It has been a long time since I was there and I never lived in one of the dorms there anyway.

Can't go wrong with anywhere in ECV, they're newer, nicer and bigger. Creswell, Russell, Oglethorpe, etc. are about as big as a size 11 shoebox.

East Campus dorms are nice. Everywhere else pretty much sucks in comparison. Living off campus is a much better option if possible.

Creswell, Russell, Ogelthorpe, Brumby were all deserving to be torn down when I arrived at UGA nigh on 20 years ago. Avoid at all costs.
Reed, Meyers, ECV are all modern and should be fine.

This. Granted, if you're a freshman then there is something special to the whole experience of living in a shitty dorm room in Creswell, Russell, Ogelthorpe, or Brumby for a year. But by Sophomore year I'd be moving to one of the betters spots or, better yet, move off campus and learn to pay your own bills, take out your own trash, fix your own shite, etc.

This will be for an incoming freshman. I understand that the ECV is mostly for upperclassmen?

I lived in Reed in 2010 and it was nice. I've been in a lot of the dorms around ECV a lot as well - modern apartment style, though a little small versus the actual apartments I stayed in.
Dorms are 2-3x more expensive than a comparable apartment, so I don't recommend living there for more than the one required year (unless $ isn't an issue, do whatever you want).

Not necessarily, upperclassmen do get priority I think and would be more likely to pick ECV, but freshman year I knew plenty of underclassmen who were lucky enough to be placed there.

I want her to be near other new freshmen for a year to make friends. Then its off to an apartment hopefully.

While the high rise dorms (Creswell, Brumby, Russell) are pretty old and crappy, that is where all the freshmen live. Especially if the kid is going to be rushing, that is where everyone will be. Purely for the social experience, I recommend those as that is where they will make the most friends.
ECV has more upperclassmen. The other small dorms are worse than the high rise dorms, minus the Meyers area. Those are nice.

It depends on what you would rather have:
A nice, spacious dorm far away from downtown/bars, or a crappy dorm that's walking distance to most places on campus and is walking distance to the bars and is where most new freshmen live (Creswell, Russell, Brumby).
I lived in Creswell and I wouldn't have traded it for anything --location is everything.

Definitely do the highrises on Baxter. Lived in Creswell 3 years ago and it was great. Also recommend doing Freshman College (a July-mester). The Baxter location is also walking distance to every class and the majority of dining halls, unlike ECV.

As some have said, the big old dorms for freshmen are special. If your daughter decides to go Greek, have her live in a house. Cheaper than an apt. and a meal plan plus, again, the experience. If she has lots of friends after year 2, rent a house for Jr & Sr years so you don't have to be moving stuff all of the time.

Creswell is the best Freshman high-rise dorm IMO. Can't beat having your own AC unit in each room

Gotta go with Russell or creswell. That's the real freshman experience. That's where everyone is, it's fun as frick, and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

The freshman high rises aren't bad. They're just small but in a convenient location. Also the socialization in Russell, Creswell, and Brumby is a big draw.
East Campus is too far away for my tastes and it's mostly upper classmen and some questionable kids mixed in with athletes. The rooms are amazing though.
The low rises along Lumpkin are decent enough but they're a little less social and more academic focused than the high rises.
I lived in Russell last year and had a good time. Highly recommend. The hill blows arse when walking up tho.

She will be rushing. And I think she listed Russell as her first choice but can change it. Seems like she may be ok there. Don't know what Freshman College is. Will check it out.

Pretty much. That's where I lived and it was a blast other than the fact that someone pulled the fire alarm about once a week every week all year. Usually around 4AM
