Tennessee, are you happy with Butch's offense?

It seems like you guys have become a running team unless you get behind. Is this more to fit Dobbs or do you think this will be what Butch wants to do going forward? Also you have the dual threat QB with committed with Guarantano. Not knocking it, your offense was way better than ours this season. Just curious about your scheme.

I dont have a problem with it. With hurd and kamara plus dobbs as a rushing threat the run game is definitely our strong point. But we cant become one dimensional. We have to throw the ball downfield to open up that run. I think too many times this year we would call plays to be safe, instead of taking chances on a big play. But as far as a run first/read option type of offense. Im fine with that.

I think Butch's offense has always been predicated on the run. Now, if he recruits an elite passer, I hope that changes.
I know this much, right now our personnel is best equipped to be a run-heavy team. Dobbs is improving as a passer, but his strength is most definitely on the ground.

Also, to answer the OPs initial question. Overall, I was very pleased with our offense this year.

Offense is predominantly run based to match Dobbs' skill set. I think Jones knows that he has to base the Offense on the QB's strengths.
In 2013 at Cincinnati, his QB's threw 469 times for just under 4,000 yards and had 516 carries for 2,200 rushing yards (47% passes and 53% rushes). In 2011, they threw 392 times for 2,700 yards and had 500 carries for 2,300 yards (44% passes and 56% rushes). So, they were relatively balanced.
This year, Tennessee has had 341 passes for 2,400 yards and 564 carries for 2,700 yards (38% rushes and 62% passes). I think when he gets a QB who is more accurate at passing and a little less mobile, you will see it get close to even again.

I think that most Vol fans recognize that you play with the guys that you have.

They love Lyle because he loves them.

I am happy with the Power Spread. This year's offense is built around Dobbs and his legs due to consistency/accuracy with passing. Once we get Dormady or Guarantano in I think the offense reverts back to more of a traditional 50/50 ratio.

The problem isn't the offensive scheme. Schemes usually aren't the problem. Every play is drawn up to score.
It's the play calling that blew my mind.
For example, 3 & 10 against Florida and we we run a damn QB sweep to the boundary, when a first down could've nearly iced the game for us.

Plus, we run regular IZ, which leaves the backside DE/LB unblocked and they make the tackle almost every damn time.
Now, nothing wrong with running IZ, but there's no threat of Dobbs keeping the ball on the read option.
The backside end has to respect the QB keep in order to run IZ efficiently.

As soon as you saw the word Tennessee in the title you probably spilled coffee racing your mouse over to click on this thread. I hope with everything I have, that nothing ever gets under my skin and lingers in my mind at every single minute of the day like Tennessee football and Butch Jones do yours.

The Vanderbilt game was as well executed and called game as I've seen in a long time. The 3rd and 4th and goals where they got stuffed were the only head scratching calls in that game. Dobbs can work on his accuracy this off-season. He wasn't around last summer to throw hardly at all.

Amen.

Yes it was. But it was never in jeopardy late in the game, where we seem to have problems.

Yes you were too conservative against us at the end of the game. But who is calling the plays at that point? Also why the heck wasn't Dobbs throwing the ball this summer?

My biggest problem with the offense was when we were trying to milk the clock against Oklahoma, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina, where if we get a 1st down, the game is over, and EVERYONE knows exactly what we're gonna do. It cost us 2 games and nearly a 3rd.

He was in Florida doing some sort of internship.

He was doing an internship. He's got a much brighter future off the field.

I gotcha. It will be interesting to see if you stay as run heavy next year as you were this year. I had no idea the disparity. You have good WRs and Dobbs is no Treon. He has stayed very healthy while running the ball a bunch of times.
