They just sat there because they knew he could not jump towards them because if he landed on them it would be a penalty. They thought the defense would jump straight up. They had no idea he would be able to jump OVER them.

I will say that when they showed the replay I was wondering why the Center stayed so low.

is that the rule, if you jump over someone and make contact it is a penalty? I remember a rule being about jumping over players on punts but wasn't sure what it was.
