Why don't they build a foot bridge from campus to Northgate?

2 families are burying kids this week, that really hurts. How much could it possibly cost?

From what I understand they were walking across University. I don't know if it was not at a cross walk or not, but the driver had a green light. Pedestrians have to be smarter than that. I would be all for a under of overpass to make things easier.

I don't know how much people would use it. I don't know the full story of what happened this weekend, but the only way you're going to stop the jaywalking of kids running out into the road is by putting barriers up that make it literally impossible to do or by planting cops up and down the street and ticketing people
It's very sad though. Having such a high traffic road next to all those bars with a ton of foot traffic is going to create some bad situations

They have done a lot. Barriers, closed a road, cracked down on jay walkers.

Because college kids are the pedestrians and the drivers, and usually drunk.

I don't really know how much more they can do honestly. I don't know where the incident happened, but if you build a crosswalk by Corner/the post office kids are still going to jay walk down by the Citgo and where Daisy Duke's used to be(forgot what the new bar is called)
I guess if you build one and it saves one more incident like this it's worth it though

No, it's not. We can't save people from their own bad choices." IF IT SAVES JUST ONE LIFE!!" is a bad reason to do anything with government. I'm sure you could save a life if you closed off university from Texas to wellborn every weekend, but is that something we should actually do? No.

It's a fairly easy thing to do though and would help with traffic flow somewhat also, which is an issue there on game days

Traffic control officers are the only method that works.
But you can't prevent every possible eventuality, no matter how much money you throw.

I think a couple of foot bridges would work well
It would be a constant flow of foot traffic instead of bottling up and waiting for the lights

You know, I was against the Wellborn underpass at first but now walking through it with hundreds of other Aggies is one of my favorite parts of going to a game.

You could put up a couple of foot bridges there.
You could also put several speed bumps in that stretch, like in a mall parking lot, to slow down the traffic. Might still be a few pedestrians hit, but a car going 10 mph instead of 30 mph would likely reduce fatalities.

I'm pretty sure the speed limit is 40 or 45 on university. Why on earth would you put speed bumps on a 4 lane street?

Speed bumps on a six lane road would be a nightmare and people wouldn't use the pedestrian ramps.
The only thing I can think of that might work to everyone's benefit is closing the street down between Wellborn and College Main on gameday. The traffic issue though, ooof. The traffic through the backstreets would get pretty bad.
At least you would get some outdoor activity on the closed street between the bars and campus as a side benefit but there is no easy answer with this one.

There were so many people in that area. My group called it a night about 20 minutes before the accident due to the number of people in that specific area.

It has been only a few years since the entire street was reworked to enhance safety ... and the students refuse to use the safe options.

It would probably cost a LOT actually. Running across 6 lanes of 40 mph traffic at night is not smart. Is it cool that they're dead? No. But to suggest that some massive broken system is the cause is absurd. There's already a perfectly fine, established, safe way to do what they instead chose to do unsafely. There are signaled crosswalks there. They could/should have used them.
This to me is like cyclists who ride on fast, crowded, curvy roads (like, say, 2222 in Austin) and then want to complain about mean 'ol car drivers making the road unsafe for them. "Share the road!", etc. Riding a bike there is a bad idea in the first place, so while I don't want to see anyone hurt or killed, I think you bear a lot of the responsibility if it happens you in that situation.

Don't think a foot bridge would work, back when they had one for crossing the railroad tracks nobody used it, that's why we now have the underpass.
From what I read, it sounds like the two kids jumped the barrier and tried to make it across. They purposely went around a safety feature, so short of making the barrier as tall as the Berlin Wall, not much you could have done to change what happened.

You can build it but then you have to make people use it and therein lies the rub. As for closing University, that's laughable considering how narrow and over crowded the streets are in NG with parked cars as it is.
