TxDot is so far behind and has zero ability to forward think that this does not surprise me.
I am hearing there is going to be a mess on 290 this weekend. I am apart of a Charter Bus heading up to CS.
leaving from 610/290 area, our plan was to take 290 to CS. it sounds like we want to avoid 290.
what is the better way for a charter bus? up through Conroe on 105? or through Tomball on 249.
would like to avoid as many top lights as possible.

Id take the private helicopter and avoid the roads all together.
I actually have no idea, I come in from Dallas, not that shite stain of a city south of CS.

I think I read that 290 was going to have no lane closures tomorrow, but let me double check that.
I can't help on alternative routes though. Been years since I've lived in Houston.

They canceled the shutdown on 290 this weekend for the game FYI
Probably not much of a difference between the two ways you posted though. If you're going to take 249 jump over to 1774 via 1488 when you're in Magnolia. Both ways will have shitty traffic for the game also though

There is construction on 290 which super blows but I still think its faster to sit the 20 minutes than take 105.

They canceled the closer
If you leave before 9 AM, you won't have any problems with traffic. It gets congested along 290 about 3-4 hours before game time. You MIGHT have to wait about five minutes at the highway 6/290 interchange.
If it isn't too far out of your way and you have a toll tag, going 99 to 290 drops you off past most of the construction since they canceled the interchange closer.

290 should not be that bad if you are leaving tomorrow morning. Once you get past cypress its not bad at all. Going the Conroe/105 route would be out of the way.

The closure of the US 290 westbound mainlanes at SH 99 Grand Parkway, originally scheduled for this weekend, was cancelled. There are no scheduled lane closures on US 290 on Saturday, which will allow for greater traffic movement for drivers traveling to College Station for the weekend game.

Honestly 290 isn't going to be bad. Will there be traffic? yes, but nothing you'll notice on a bus. Unless you want to take Hwy 249 all the way up to 105 and take 105 west, there isn't an alternate route.
EDIT:
More in depth: from 290/610, you'd take 290 until SHP and ride that north for about a mile, then exit on Hwy 249. Take that north forever until you get to Montgomery and take a left on hwy 105 going west. Its a nice country drive to Navasota, and then head north on hwy 6.
Shouldn't have any problems doing it on a bus, as long as tolls aren't an issue.

If there will be no closures on 290, you might want to consider 290 to Hempstead, but NOT taking Hwy 6 from 290 at Hempstead (thru Navasota) and instead going thru Brenham to Lyons and taking Hwy 60 into College Station from the west. You avoid all of the BCS traffic until you are ALMOST on campus. This works well ESPECIALLY if you will be tailgating and such west of the stadium.
There is some construction on Hwy 60 in Snook, but so few people use this route that the construction should be a non-factor.
105 is ALWAYS a nightmare, doubly-so during Ren-Fest.

290 is not closed this weekend.
Do not take 249 to 1774. Its ren fest and there will be a bunch of traffic.
Do not go through Conroe because that is way out of the way.
Either go 290 to 6 and face some traffic of take i10 to 259 to 290 to 6. There will likely be traffic at 290 to 6 no matter what.

If you follow rule 1 (don't be an a-hole), you'll probably be offered a lot of free beer/alcohol while you're in town. Enjoy it.
I'd also suggest going to midnight yell.

I used to make the trip through Tomball to 105 weekly while in college (North Houston to College Station).
On a charter bus the 'back roads' could be hard to maneuver, they were fun to maneuver in a sports car but there are some pretty ugly turns to make going through magnolia on the way to Plantersville (105).
Both the Conroe and Tomball converge on the 105 route through Plantersville to highway 6. The Conroe route would be the less hazardous to a Charter Bus.
That being said, I don't know how much time you'll save. 105 (and the roads to 105 through Tomball/Magnolia) are 2-lane roads with stop-lights at Plantersvilled and then obviously at the junction to Highway 6.
Plenty of people seem to know the route these days as Magnolia and Conroe have expanded considerably in the last decade. So it could be well crowded.
I'd say it's a gamble at best, especially in a charter.

This instead of a charter bus will make your commute a breeze.

Completely forgot about Ren fest. Just avoid 105 all together. That route is a shite show during Ren fest.
