I can't say that I'd ever consider moving back to Montgomery.
I lived there 4 years when I was in college and I've worked there for 28.
If that was my only impression of Alabama, I'd want to get the hell out as fast as I could too.

Grew up in Birmingham and went to Bama. Moved away 15 years ago and now live in the southwest and I have been pretty much everywhere in the U.S. Wife is from Los Angeles and I spend a lot of time out there.......couldn't wait to GTFO of Alabama at the time....now I miss a lot about it...Birmingham has improved a lot and miss certain places (thinking of Lake Martin)....I would probably get bored after awhile tho but old friends and family are important. I try and get back once or twice a year now.

I turned down a really good job offer right out of college in Montgomery. My dad was PISSED, but I had/have no regrets. Spent a weekend there to check it out, and quickly said nope. They'd have had to offer me triple, at least, to move there.

I moved to New Orleans for around 10 years after graduating from Alabama.
Then I moved back home to the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay 10 years ago.
It is heaven on earth. I just can't imagine living anywhere else.

There's nothing for me here except my family. They will always be just a plane trip away.

Grew up in Huntsville, went to Alabama for college, graduated and now live in Birmingham. I didn't want to get a job in Alabama after I graduated. I applied to one job in Birmingham and all the rest were out of state. The first job that got offered to me was the one in Birmingham. Looking back I'm glad that's the way it worked out. I've spent a lot of meaningful time with my grandfather and mother and have been able to spend a lot of time with my friends who stuck around this area. I wouldn't trade that for anything.
However, Looks like a move to NOLA may be in my near future if things continue with the SO. We will see.

Grew up in the Gump. My whole family still lives there. I left for Bama after high school. Moved back a few years later. It was my home base for several years, but I was on the road most of the time. Lived in England, New York, NOLA, Nashville, Bham, Colorado since then. Moved down to Florida 6 years ago and I'm now married and settled in for a while. Could never live in Bama again, but I go visit family now and then. Not for long though. Florida is home, but Bama is Home.

Grew up in south Alabama. Joined the Army and have lived all over. When I retired, we moved to Louisiana... wife's family is from here. They're all rabid LSU fans and it pisses them off that I'm an Alabama fan. Her side of the family was devastated when our son enrolled at UA. They haven't ever gotten over Saban taking the job at Bama and they will go to their graves muttering 1-9-12. I'd like to go back to Alabama, but it's probably not in the cards.

I lived in Louisiana for five years and pretty much hated it. Been living in Birmingham for the last two years now and like it a lot, but would like to try some place new in a couple of years. I've lived in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa for most of my life, and just feel like it'll be time for something different after a while.

Live in Tuscaloosa now and I love it. Grew up around Wetumpka and liked it. Hate Montgomery other than their alley bar. Really didn't like Birmingham growing up, but I do love the direction it's headed. The downtown is being revamped, but still some empty spaces on dense buildings.
Tuscaloosa, Mobile, and Huntsville are all seeing some retail boom and rejuvenating its downtown.

I have family in Texas and have visited Austin a lot. I would love to live there and experience its growth. I saw a statistic that said 150 people on average move there every day. They have a great music scene, great parks and outdoor activities, and awesome entertainment districts.

I grew up in southeast Alabama my whole life and then attended UA 2010-2013. Spent another two years after graduating living back home in Dothan, AL and finally got my first career job in of all places, Knoxville, TN. No lie, I have been here in Knoxville for eight months now and I have just about zero desire to live anywhere else. It's the absolute perfect mix of everything I am interested in and just big enough to give you a cool city and downtown vibe without being too big. The outdoor activities are awesome and endless and having the Smokies constantly in the distant background is awesome. Plus, I am only four hours or less from so many cool places in the surrounding states.
The ribbing from UT fans can get annoying on occasion, but it is almost always for fun. I haven't experienced anything malicious yet. I wish T-Town was just an hour or two closer than it is, but its's not terrible. The only cities in Alabama I could see myself living in are either Tuscaloosa or Birmingham and that's about it, but at this point I don't have much interest to trade my proximity to the mountains.

Moved to Los Angeles immediately after graduating from Bama. Started out living in a UCLA fraternity house and gradually moved into better and better living situations with fewer and fewer roommates, picking up my Auburn fan wife along the way.
We now have kids and live in south Redondo Beach, 3 blocks from the ocean, and it's quiet and safe and feels nothing like Los Angeles. We still enjoy going "home" to visit family and spend time on Lake Martin, but we can't really ever see ourselves moving back.

Gonna retire to a place I just bought NE of Dothan. It's a couple miles from the family farm that I deer and turkey hunt. I'll spend the hunting seasons up there and part of the year down here in SoFla.

To answer the OP, I grew up outside of Birmingham. Mobile for undergrad. Birmingham for med school.
Spent several great years in Texas during my training. Now I'm in Florida.
Birmingham has changed a lot for the better since I was a kid, and I'd move back that way if the right opportunity presented itself.
But, like CrimsonCoast said, south Baldwin County is heaven on earth. I'd love to have a little camp on Magnolia Springs or Wolf Bay.

I lived in Gadsden most of my life. Now live in a growing Attalla. I guess I'm content.
