So, apparently, Grier still hasn't won the starting role just yet...

...according to McElwain.
quote:
Redshirt freshman quarterback Will Grier came up big in the clutch Saturday, leading Florida on two late touchdown drives to pull out a victory over Tennessee. But those two drives, which included three fourth-down conversions on Grier completions, have not solidified his role as the starter, UF coach Jim McElwain said Monday.
“No,” McElwain said. “Those two drives at the end are what he's supposed to do. That's what you do when you play the position. We practice it that way and he executed it. There were a lot of drives there that weren't executed, so we've got a long ways to go.

It's gamesmanship at this point. Will Grier is the mother fricking QB and everyone fricking knows it, including Jim McElwain.
I'm tired of him fricking around with it though. Honestly. But hey - I won't complain if UF keeps winning

It's all coach speak.
And it's to keep Grier from getting complacent.

Finch doesn't like Grier, though.
That's kinda the point of all these posts about it.
"Jeff Driskel 2.0", shite like that everywhere I look with Finch.
Grier's done better on the field and off, so he's the guy.
You drive it down against Tennessee and lead a comeback down 20 - 7, you've got the job period.
I wouldn't mind restin Grier once in a while, but there is absolutely no way Harris takes the job back unless Grier really, really sucks it up.

If he can perform against Ole Miss during the entire game like he did Tennessee in the fourth quarter, I'll change my tune.
And he did have some Driskel type moments Saturday. Just sayin'. He's young though so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

What has Harris shown you exactly that makes you think Grier is not the guy?

Driskel while at Louisiana Tech is 12 - 1 for turnovers to touchdowns (rushing included).
Grier has weapons this year, Driskel had absolutely none. It's bizarre how quarterbacks from UF go to other schools and do perfectly well.
Murphy.
Brisset.
Driskel.
So just lay off Driskel now, okay? The experiment is pretty much completed as to what sucked about our offense the last few years. (The answer is not our quarterback, it's our HC.) Thanks dude.

Grier is a redshirt freshman who before this season hadn't played since high school.
I'd say hes done pretty damn well so far.

None of us are the HC at UF and I wish we would have put Harris in the game when Grier struggled so badly in 2nd and 3rd qts...it could have cost us the game.
Did he perform great in 4th qt? Hell yes. But UT had the pass rush hitting Grier a lot and a fresh qb for 2 series could have been a difference maker.
Dont think for a second he trying to motivate Grier...Grier knows he made a lot bad throws and decisions...we need more than 1 qt of great football. If Harris practices well this week...I think you will see him spell Grier for a series or two. Grier has to protect his body...that OL will get him killed and he needs to know when to slide. One qb is not enough with this young OL.

I have no idea how anyone can say anything bad about a redshirt freshman who hit perfect passes when it counted to bring us back from a 13 point deficit to win the game.
Yeah, he made some questionable throws -- because we have three freshmen offensive linemen.
If Conkrite, Grier and Calloway are on the field at the same time, we have more Freshmen playing than other positions combined.
Treon's an okay quarterback, but he's no where near as accurate as Grier, and honestly I haven't seen any reason to believe he's more mobile -- he's faster, but they seem to have different running styles.
Not to mention Harris got busted for pot and got himself suspended.
During the fricking Tennessee game -- arguably one of the most important games on our schedule when he knows we have no other quarterbacks.
frick selfish players, and even more: If you still doubt Grier after he drove the ball down the field down two scores, threaded the needle to score a touchdown, then nailed a 4th and 14 to make it possible to win the game?
You've got ulterior motives.

Well...I know one thing...NOBODY on this board can question Coach Mac on his decisions...he has pushed all the right buttons and we are 4-0 and believe it or not the defense had a helluva lot to do with us being 4-0.
If Coach Mac decided to insert Bullard at QB...he has earned the right to make that decision...but of course if he did do that and Bullard couldnt get job done...he would hear it loud and clear.
HC Mac also said Treon is welcomed back and is a part of the team. If we want to kick out 1/2 the team for pot then lets do it. If Mac is ok...Im ok.
I remember being 19 yrs old.

Nobody is questioning it, because it's Grier. Everyone knows it's Grier, it's just weird that people keep thinking Harris is a serious contender at this point.

"Last month, Harris was pulled over by University police late at night for speeding on campus when a strong odor of marijuana was pouring out of the car. During the stop for the speeding violation, at least two bags of the illegal drug were found, and Treon Harris was driving without a license."
frick Harris, man. He got off with a citation that would land every single fricking one of us in jail.
Then he goes and does it again?
I'd run Scarlett or, really, any of the running backs go wildcat every down rather than put Treon in at this point.
Clearly getting high is more important to him than being part of the team.

I like Grier. He seems to be coming along nicely however, he really, really needs work on his deep ball. It's just bad. If he can get some extra work in and get that pass down we can really punish some defenses.
It would also take some pressure off him if we could run the ball more. It almost feels like we run the ball on occassion just to say we did it. If we could get some strong runs on 1st down and give him cushion on 2nd and 3rd it would help tremendously IMO.

Absolutely NOTHING Grier did on Saturday reminded me of Driskel. Nothing. He was the anti-Driskel actually. When the team needed him, he became a man. And for a redshirt freshman quarterback in his third career start, I'd say we found our guy. We haven't seen a quarterback take over a game like that since Tebow. Nothing about what Grier did on Saturday reminded me of Driskel.

This is really getting old. One QB leads us back to beat Tennessee while the other is suspended for smoking pot. Leadership at QB is important, and that includes leading off the field. At this point I don't care if Harris is the best QB, Grief is the best Leader and deserves to hear that from his coach. The best thing that could happen is if Harris transfers. I am tired of selfish players who care more about themselves than the team, being forgiven time after time for their actions.
Go Gators, beat Ole Miss.

I will say this... Grier is one tough mother fricker.
But at some point he may be injured or unable to play for a few series, and goddamit... Harris is going to have to be ready to go out there and play.
As much as I hate to admit it.

it'll be good to have treon around at least for the rest of this year.
he's transferring next semester anyway, unless he somehow wins the starting job.

Is that confirmed that Treon is for sure transferring?
I haven't seen that anywhere, although it wouldn't be surprising.

Straw... are we going at it again? shite, I cant fight Ole Miss and you at same time...getting too old.
Im glad though that you were in the coaches meeting yesterday and found out all this useful info...Im storing it right here in left right file cabinet. Dont think for a minute that Grier is being fried in the media as a motivation...he was awful at times in 2nd and 3rd qt....you need to watch replay. Some of it his fault and some not his (like ball bouncing off Wortons helmut...which is why we have really just 3 trusted WRs) Grier was hesitant at times and doubleclutched another time. As a r/s frosh he is doing excellent and should I mention the "H" word? He is on track for it by next year or year after. What he has done with such an inexperienced OL is remarkable.
UF & UT both ran about 71-73 snaps...thats asking a lot of your defense in hot humid weather...and I hate punting the ball to put them out on the field too much. Now, did Grier play awesome in 4th qt...you betcha and I think HC McElwains point is that we should NOT have been down 13 points...70+ snaps for your opponent will lose games. Our OL is a work in progress and I was grinding my teeth after some of the hits Grier took. He is tough. We need a backup QB if not for the sake of giving Grier rest on a humid night and also to protect him.
I have no motive for wanting Harris to play...so thats bogus as hell Straw. Pot? Again...raise your hands if you NEVER ever smoked pot at 19? And another thing is that I didnt realize Straw was inside the compliance dept with full knowledge of what happened to Harris to be suspended, none of us know exactly.
Lets see what happens...HC McElwain wants Harris and he makes the big bucks.

Never smoked pot, can say that because I was in the military just before my 20th birthday and in the Navy (when it was downsizing) that was a sure way to get the boot from boot.
We don't need to fight, man, because Mac is playing games at this point. It's Grier, 100%. One guy has two run ins with the law, a possible arrest and now a suspension from a game for the same thing. This is twice. Once, sure, boys will be boys (but I'd beat the frick out of my son if he was caught driving with marijuana and without a license in someone else's car while speeding in another person's car), but twice? For the same thing?
Can't overlook it. Grier led the team to a comeback, period. Everything before the end score is irrelevant.
