ATHENS — The UGA athletic board has scheduled a “special meeting” for Monday at 2:30 p.m., and the topic is the school’s long-awaited indoor practice facility, according to a source.
The meeting, which will be held via teleconference, was just added to the school’s master calendar on Monday.
The board will be asked to give final approval for the building of the facility, according to the source. It wasn’t known yet what other details – such as cost and when construction will begin – will be filled in on Monday.
It is known that the facility will be built on the football team’s existing upper turf fields, either as an addition to the existing Butts-Mehre facility, or replacing some of it.
Athletics director Greg McGarity has said that the building will not be ready for the 2016 season, because ground and soil work will take too long. McGarity could not be immediately reached for comment on Monday.

Didn't FSU and UF both announce and get theirs built in about 8 months?

Ours is going to be a MUCH nicer facility. They're looking/thinking long term. I like it.

Well, I hope so. It should be given the extra time and money we have. Question is how much nicer and better are we going to get... I guess we'll see...

Yes, but ours is not only bigger/nicer but there's also a lot more to do in terms of moving utilities. If we were just throwing up a warehouse with turf inside like most IPFs, yeah we'd have it before next season.

Seth Emerson-Proposed cost of UGA indoor facility: $30.2 million ... $15.1 million coming from cash reserves, and $15.1 million via fundraising.

how much did some of the other recent IPFs at other places cost?

Not sure...
Seth Emerson- UGA athletic board has formally approved proceeding with plan to build a $30.2 million indoor facility. Story to come shortly.
Floridas was around 17 million. But I think it's basically just a warehouse

The UGA athletic board unanimously approved, via teleconference on Monday, a plan presented by athletics director Greg McGarity to proceed with the building once the coming football season is over. It will be located adjacent to the Butts-Mehre complex, on the current site of the team’s outdoor grass fields. No timetable was given by McGarity, but the project is not expected to be done in time for the 2016 season.
quote:
The board approved a cost of $30.2 million for the project, half drawn from the athletics department’s reserve fund, and the other half via fundraising. “Getting the $15 million raised as quickly as possible would be optimal,” UGA president Jere Morehead said on the call. In fact, McGarity added, they would hope to raise even more than $15.1 million, as there are other facility projects for other sports the school hopes to build. Any extra money from the football facility fundraising could then be put toward those other projects. The $30.2 million price tag is more than other facilities that have been built at other schools, McGarity said, due to the “proximity” to the current football building. The facility will be 80 yards wide, 140 yards long, 65 feet high inside and 75 feet high outside. Renderings were not immediately available to the media, but were passed out to board members prior to Monday’s meeting. “This building will be a 50-to-100 year building that will have major construction as far as the total project here,” McGarity said, adding there will be a “tremendous amount of detail (toward the facility) due to its location.” It will not just be a football buidling: There will be a track, batting cages for baseball and softball, and other track.
quote:
“All our programs in essence would be able to utilize this building for offseason conditioning,” McGarity said. “All of our sports will be impacted by this. I do think this will be a transformational facility for our entire program, once we finish this as soon as possible.” Once this football season ends, site condition planning will begin, which will include digging down 12 feet on the location of the future facility. McGarity estimated that proceed would take about 100 days, at which point they would proceed to the next part of the plan. “Certainly not taking any shortcuts because this building will be here a long, long time, and we want to make sure we get this right,” McGarity said.

meh, that doesn't bother me. We're a big time school so if our baseball team needs to get in there then so be it

From Jake Rowe on 24/7

McGarity says current Nalley Multi-Purpose room will be demolished.

In the current plan, the two artificial fields will become grass fields.

Should get to see renderings sometime today.

Pretty cool little note here.
There will be a 21-foot buffer (sideline) for the indoor fields. Most are pretty tight on the side like that but McGarity said he wanted to have plenty of room on the side like that.
