Another way to look at things, short term vs. long term. Mid 70s was about when all teams were fully integrated racially. This gives you an idea of recent success to all-time success.
10 year win % compared with 40 year win %
Missouri 68.9 50.6 +18.3 (Pinkel deserves credit)
LSU 78.0 64.91 +13.1 (Thanks Les Miles)
S. Carolina 65.1 54.3 +10.8 (Thanks Steve Spurrier)
Vanderbilt 42.3 31.7 +10.6 (Thanks Johnson and Franklin)
Miss St. 51.2 44.7 +6.5 (Mullen deserves credit)
Alabama 76.8 71.2 +5.6 (Saban raises bar even higher)
Florida 72.3 70.1 +2.2 (Urban left)
Kentucky 42.7 41.9 +0.8 (When does basketball start)
Auburn 67.4 66.9 +0.5 (Most enigmatic program)
Georgia 71.2 70.8 +0.4 (Steady)
Ole Miss 46.8 51.2 -4.4 (The 60s were a long time ago)
Arkansas 55.6 61.0 -5.4 (SEC tougher than SWC)
Texas A&M 59.1 64.92 -5.8 (See one above)
Tennessee 51.2 65.6 -14.4 (WTF?)

I would say that the last decade for Tennessee probably warrants a good WTF.

This was actually a good idea for a thread. Well done.

Why 40 years ? 50 or better yet 25. 40 sounds like a number you used to make a certain team seem better.

LSU was good in the late 70s, but I would have started with 1982 or 1995 if I really wanted to bias the stats toward LSU. I also excluded an SEC champion LSU team in 1970.

Dude, I was just responding for the reason for the 40 year timeline. I didn't come up with it.

Wasn't directing it at you. I just used Alabama's two NC Teams as an example of why his selection criteria was off base.

There's a lot more white faces in '78 than '11, that's for sure.
My pop got several football offers out of HS as an OG in '72 - he was 6'3 230. Times have changed quite a lot.

40 years would have been 1975.
When was the last school integrated? And was it actually integration or just "hey look we have a black guy on our team like we promised"?
Idk, I want around then. But I imagine it was a gradual process as opposed to a sudden one. It's only recently acceptable for non-whites to play qb.
40 years probably covers the largest amount of time that had teams recruiting based on ability with negligible regard to race.

What year do you want me to use?
No matter what year I choose, the comparison with the last 10 years will show that...
1) Alabama is even better than they have always been
2) LSU is significantly better than they have always been
3) Auburn is ON AVERAGE about where they have always been - which is about 4th in the SEC (slightly better than LSU over 40 years but not better than LSU - ON AVERAGE - over the last 10 years.

Lol, A&M is doing way better in the SEC the past 3 years than the 7 before. Just a bad decade.

The best date to go back to would be when Scholarships were reduced to 85/25. That is when it became a level playing field.

It was fully in effect by 1994.

All I get from this is that the teams at the top have just had their best 10 years.
