That sucks. I really thought he could help us.

Mauk said that these receivers are more athletic than the receivers the 2 previous years he's been here.

The real QB controversy will be next year if Lock continues to improve and Mauk has another season of .500 completion percentage, particularly if we don't win like last year.
Sucks to hear about Johnson. Was really getting excited to watch him on the field.
Any word on the RB's and who looked good? Abbington? Steward?

Mauk vs. 1st team: 1 of 4, TD; vs. 2nd team: 9 of 18
Mauk by far the worst QB on the field looking only numbers. No production against #1's (who he'll see all year), below average production against back ups.
quote:
Eddie Printz vs. 1st team: 8 of 15; vs. 2nd team: 3 of 6
Not just better, but most of the better was against the starters.
quote:
Marvin Zanders vs. 1st team: 0 of 3; vs. 2nd team: 3 of 3; vs. 3rd/4th team: 7 of 9
Great against backups.
quote:
Lock vs. 1st team: 1 of 1; vs. 2nd team: 2 of 3; vs. 3rd/4th team: 11 of 15
Pretty much good stuff no matter who it was against.

Agreed. Mauk will have lost Mcgovern and boehm on the line to the NFL and will take more shots. We know that makes him rush out of the pocket and bad decisions will be made. He should be fine with this year's protection. Sounds like the receivers may be young but I feel a lot better after the scrimmage.

Outside of the OL false starts and the 2 injuries, sounds like a productive scrimmage. Lots of players on both sides had good moments.

I'm not advocating a controversy. There's no way you can throw a FR in at QB for Mizzou IMO. Especially with Mauk's experience.
If Lock is the better option why should seniority or experience play a role here? The idea that we should let a below 60% passer, who also may have reached his ceiling for potential, continue to run our offense is mind boggling to me. I may be in the minority here but I personally think Mauk has the potential to lose us 2 games this year.
When your QB coach tells Pete Scantlebury after the scrimmage that Mauk has not taken a step forward or a step back and that he still has to show more consistency that's an issue when you are in your 4th year in the program.

You could sense Hill was frustrated with Maty's performance. No doubt.
I was one to say it was crazy for anyone to suggest Lock would play. It still is. It's only one scrimmage and Pinkel just is not one to replace a returning starter. You also have to think if Lock would start by some crazy reason then all of these guys are going to transfer out and we would be fricked.
If it continues down this path though. Maybe there is a decision to be made, but I still highly doubt it.

I think Mauk is the clear cut number one no controversy no matter what happens in the 2nd scrimmage.
You are right there may be more to lose in a situation where you have an incumbent at the QB position that I may not see. I don't see massive departures though if you start a freshman, I do see a situation similar to what happened at FSU where top QB prospects may were looking elsewhere when it was reported Jameis would stay past his RS Soph season.
I personally look at talent as a greater trait than experience but I also can see how you want more experience at impact positions i.e. QB, LT, and DE/OLB. I hope Mauk shows that improvement and he does well because he is the starter no matter what, I really do.

I'd call it maturity. Some gain the maturity through experience. I think Lock has come in with it. It's just natural for him.

I agree. Mauk is the starter. The only time Pinkel has replaced a starter was when he first came to mizzou, and replaced Kirk Farmer with Brad Smith (his recruit).
Also, it was just one scrimmage. Its great that people did so well, but y'all have to remember that it is just touch the QB. No real pressure, knowing your not going to get lit up.

Injury report
Johnson- severe sprain. Out indefinitely. At least it wasn't broken. Still probably leads to a RS for him.
Ross- sprained shoulder. Day to day
Bagget- back spasms. Day to day
Steward- out. Supposedly a planned day off
Laurent- viral illness. Day to day
Floyd/Richard- practicing in red
Should see a new depth chart after practice today.

Well frick, add this...
@Dave_Matter: Pinkel says WR J'Mon Moore hurt his shoulder in practice today. Didn't elaborate on severity.

Seems Frazier is making a run at Brady. Also seemed that Pinkel was really high on Johnson, and the Moore injury may be serious.

Sure doesn't sound good for Moore.

Still think Johnson plays this year as does Hall. And although I don't think Smith plays this year, by the time he is a sophomore or junior I think he will be the star of the WRs.

I broken ankle would be better if it's truly a severe sprain. If he misses more than a few weeks into the season, he'll be a RS unless the receivers are a mess.
Moore sounds done for awhile. I know Nate Brown is a great all around WR, but Moore and Johnson were shaping up to be our biggest threats.
Amazing how this stuff happens at the rate it does.
There has been a mild evolution across all sports, but very very mild. A revolution on how spring training/training camps are conducted is way overdue.
Athletes are so different today. They work out 11.5 months a year. They get sport specific at a young age.

Hall is probably the surest bet to play if Moore is out for awhile, which unfortunately it seems he will be.
Johnson seems like he'll be out for quite awhile as well.
Blair, Dilosa and Wingo are going to have to step up big time.
That's two pretty big hits to the WR corps, which was looking pretty good for awhile.
