But for only 120 years. Athens and UGA have existed for almost as long as the country has. Most all of the private institutions that predated UGA either exist in cities like Boston or Hartford or were founded in pre-established towns.

Regarding Ben Epps Airport...


A few months after the Wright Bros made history with their flight in NC, local Athens man Ben Epps built and flew his airplane in Athens, the first flight in Georgia.


He took off from and landed on Washington Street downtown.

but how big was UGA in the first 100 years? I suspect most of its students were the rich kids of slave owners and wealthy merchants.
