this post is from hunter48 on the bunker...gave me a MASSIVE footballboner....incredible how complex Muschamp's defense is compared to EJs...
There are going to be similarities between all defenses to a degree, bc there are only so many variables that can be altered to create a scheme. However, Muschamp's scheme is much more multiple than CEJ's. Now, when Boom has a 4 man front and runs a cover three or man-free variant, then it will look, at surface value like what you've seen the past few years. Yes there were times when the weakside end played a "bandit" technique and was up in a two-point stance, and occasionally he showed a 3-3-5 look and ran the exact same blitz every time, but 90+ percent of the time you got the same personnel, with no stunt or movement, and no games in coverage-they played exactly what they showed-which gets you beat by a good junior varsity QB.
Let's look at one possible CWM front/movement/coverage vs 2x2 spread with the back dictating the strong side:
3 down linemen 5-1-3-Hybrid "buck" at 5 in two point stance
3 backers-Sam apexed out between SDE and #2 wide receiver, Mike in a 30 over the strong B gap, and Will in a 10 over the weak A
Strong safety aligned at 8 yards over the weak #2
Free safety at 12 over the strong side OT
Corners at 6 yards head up the two #1 (outside receivers)
From this alignment you can and will get a multitude of things, for instance if it is 1st and 10 and its an outside run team, on the snap
** the corners would sit in the socket 6-8yds and play wide run force first with secondary pass response being the flat/hitch/out/bubble/swing
**FS would slide to the strong seam over the number 2 receiver playing a pass first response looking 2 to 1 to Q with vertical route responsibility over that half of the field. the SS would do the same on the off side.
**The SAM linebacker has the 5-7 gap (anything outside the tackle) with the job to box it in on his inside shoulder allowing the mike to fit over the top on a wide run. He would carry seam to slant once pass is read.
**The Mike is strong b gap fit on any downhill run and over the top strong wide, run through to cut back weakside, once pass is read he would open strong and drop to hold the deep middle hold looking for deep slant or dig, if no strong route speed turn to weakside to find weak crosser.
**The will plays weak A on downhill flow, over the top on weak wide, and run through to cut back on strong side, with seam to slant coverage vs. pass
The D-line works for penetration and pursuit in the gaps for which they are aligned.
Let's take the exact same alignment and say it's 3rd and 6, a med pass down, from the exact same alignment you get a 6 man pass rush (blitz), with a gap exchange and 0 man coverage.
**The SDE rushes wide outside, The 1 tech works to collapse strong A and demand a double team, the 3 tech slants across the guards face to collapse weak A with the center facing away, the Buck slants hard to B with the Will coming hard to the weakside edge. The Sam works outside-in to rush the strong B gap.
**The mike had to man match the back strong side, if the back flares weak the Will will have to release and match him in blitz peel technique.
**Free safety will roll down to 6 and play man over/on #2 on vertical and out routes, if he slants in he will give the mike an in-call and let the him play the slant while looking to match the back out of the backfield.
**SS will roll to LOS and man up #2
**Both corners will creep on the cadence to press with inside leverage
No the QB has less than 2 seconds to read and complete, with any routes having to open up outside bc of leverage, making them take longer and the throw more difficult.
One more from the same front: 2nd and 3 90% run down tendency
Fire Zone front to immediately take away all rush lanes, create a free running LB, and keep 3 deep to oblige play-action
**SDE collapses to inside B gap, 1-tech crosses face of center to weak A, 3 tech presses weak B, Buck sets edge at weak 5
**Sam sets Edge working to inside shoulder of #2 to C/D gap with secondary Screen/Flat coverage response
**Mike Blows up strong A
** Will Lb is the free runner to either side
**SS holds weak seam to flat
**FS deep middle 3rd, take away play-action to either inside receiver
**Corners deep outer third with secondary edge run contain
That's one hypothetical front with 3 concepts, you'll see 5 or more different fronts, each with 5-6 more concepts behind each one to match the situation. CEJ had 1 front 75% of the time, with 2 concepts behind it, the other 25% were one-trick fronts and stunts, when you saw it, you got one thing. You can back and watch Scar and UGA align, look at the defense, and then call the play to the weakness of the defense. Spurrier, literally called the plays to the QB from the sidelines after over looking the D. Boom ain't easy to pick on.
My favorite thing about CWM, is if you establish anything, he's gonna take it away from you by bringing sick pressure and make you respond.....see UF game 2006.

I'm pretty stoked about seeing a formidable secondary of Ford, Trigga Tray, Jones, and hopefully Countess. I haven't been this excited about an Auburn team in a loooong time.

I'm going to be interested in seeing how much players move around in formations. For the most part with CEJ, you kind of knew where people were going to line up with maybe Therezie moving around some. This scheme seems like it would be able to switch the buck side at will (especially if Lawson and Cowart are on the field at the same time.)

We are going to make Louisville hurt bad. It's going to be ugly.
