Small business owners, what kind of business do you run?

I've been getting so much freelance videography work lately that I'm thinking of starting my own production company. Just looking for some advice and discussion from the small business owners of the Rant.

The first one is free, that's all I got.

I run a small laboratory of sorts out of my basement.

Two drug dealers so far, anybody else?

When I graduate I am starting the first saffron farm in the United States. I am working on a website right now and copyright stuff. I hope to sell it off in 6-7 years and use the profits to buy real estate and maybe build a restaurant in CS across from Kyle Field

You going to pluck and dry all those saffron stigmas yourself? You know it takes over 4,000 saffron flowers to produce an ounce ($73 worth)?

Don't worry I've researched this for about 9 months. It takes 65,000-70,000 flowers and an ounce is selling for $300 dollars in Dallas currently

Liberals don't know how to run businesses.

Good on ya. Just making sure you're not a dumb college kid thinking "duh, just plant saffron and profit."
Hope you make it.

I own a CSA farm. I sell shares of my harvest in exchange for an upfront fee, wherein someone gets ~22 weeks of produce for 50 dollars a week.

It was ball busting work at first, but fortunately there are a multitude of stinky young kids (much like I was) who are willing to work for room/board, and I pay two others $400 dollars a month in addition to housing so that I really don't have to do much other than give directions and teach.

1. Look into the SBA.gov. A lot of govt services purchase video/audio production services. Get a Sam# and see if you are qualified for any certifications, like woman owned, minority owned, vet owned, HUBzone, etc... that could help you win or subcontract on bids. After that, or during it if you need help filling out the paperwork, get one of the sites like winbidspro.com, to help you search open bids for production work.
2. Sales and Marketing aren't the same thing. Come up with a plan to market, and there are companies out there who can even help you target market in social media and professional associations.
3. Think about depreciation before buying most of that production equipment. It's often better to lease it, than it is to own, store, insure, upgrade, replace it.

I wish you the best. Post your site in the future and I'll be sure to order some and make paella with it
