A few thoughts. 1). You're a typical idiot who feels that if you associate yourself with smart people maybe no one notices how dumb you are. But your association with atheism or whatever label you want to throw on it makes you no dumber or smarter than you are otherwise. 2). This is true across society. The adherence to a belief system doesn't provide us with any sort of reliable predictor as to a person's intelligence or lack thereof. 3). As the demographics of college attendees has changed, so has their religiosity.

But that doesn't explain Schwadel's most surprising finding: For people born during the 1970s, not going to college makes you more likely to say that you're not religious.

The reason for this may be that atheism, agnosticism, and general religious indifference has become more normal across social classes, Schwadel said. "For those people who were born earlier than the 1900s, it might have been something that wasn’t acceptable among a lot of Americans, except those who were among the upper classes—those select few who were going to college and graduating in the 1910s, ‘20s, and ‘30s. But as college education has grown, having no religious affiliation has become less ostracizing."

Just posting facts, no need to get so hostile. If you don't like the data, take it up with Pew.

I agree raw intelligence doesn't say a lot about what a person's religious beliefs are. However, highly intelligent (and even more so well educated) religious people often have very different interpretations than their less intelligent brethren.

Compare the Christian beliefs of someone like Francis Collins with say, Kent Hovind or Ray Comfort. One is clearly brilliant and incorporates their belief into the world around them, while the other two are blinded by ignorance and incorporate the world into what they believe the Bible teaches.

I would say that typically, fundamentalists/literalists/YEC/etc are less intelligent than the more open members of the faith. Some beliefs just cause too much cognitive dissonance in the minds of intelligent educated people to be believed.
