Texas A&M and Texas should break away and start their own conference so we don't have to put up with shite anymore. They can take Arkansas with them as well.
Texas
Texas A&M
Arkansas
Houston
TCU
Baylor
Rice
SMU
I think that would be a pretty good conference.

I think this is the heart of the matter. A&M views its move to the SEC this way. If you are in any other conference, you would view it as a good football move. But kind of weird social/academic move. Texas was in the Confederacy but most folks along and West of 35 wouldn't see it as anything other than an attempt to get out of Texas' shadow and make a solid and bold football move. "Growth as an institution." That seems a bit much to most. You changed athletic conference. Like Colorado. Like Utah. Like West Virginia. It happens. Elevating it to more than that seems a bit dramatic. But not surprising for Aggies.
From the outside, probably. But you have to appreciate the significance of football of this state. texas vs Texas A&M was symbolic of many things. Liberal vs conservative, city vs country, etc. It's a bitter rivalry because it symbolized the struggle for different ways of life. I don't think it's overdramatic to liken it to that because of the uncommon importance placed on football. If that doesn't register, explain to say..europeans why we have two 100K plus stadiums to watch amateur athletics. It's a big deal. Texas A&M's identity is no longer tied to texas.
quote:
You had a little man with a big bow tie who made an intelligent move. You have an Aggie who was governor. Other than that, not much has changed, other than A&M growing in size.
Going to disagree. Look at academic rankings, enrollment, and things like that over the last 20 years for Texas A&M. Night and day, culminating in this.
quote:
Stanford has been relevant (I'd say more relevant) in about the same time frame that the Aggies claim they have been relevant. Actual BCS bowls. That was due to a great coach and a great quarterback.
And yes, there is no reason that the program can't compete for national titles with the right people. You can say that about 50% of the teams in all of the conferences.
I think the feeling on both sides, at least the bulletin board poster, is that neither side cares if they play each other again. Not sure why anyone feels it is important to write about this either.
Odd that the coaches, especially Strong, felt compelled to say they wanted the rivalry to resume. Strong especially should be focused on other things.
Stanford benefits from a league that has maybe 2-3 serious teams year in and out. Oregon, yall, and maybe a L.A. or Arizona school. I like Stanford and how they play ball, but be honest. It's not the SEC over there.
quote:
A&M won its only title, and had its best success, when it was grand dad's Texas A&M and there was the 3:1 ratio of enrollment.
I don't really see how it's not poised for much bigger things today but you wouldn't see it if you wanted to.

13 National Champions
8 Heisman Trophy Winners
A bunch of Cotton Bowl wins until they had play an SEC team every year.
Seems legit.

Football is important. The UT/A&M game wasn't important the last 20 years. Football will certainly survive without the game being played.

I'll assume that you have been keeping tabs on this. From the outside, A&M has maintained its academic reputation but I don't see it as bolstering it significantly over the last 20 years. Out of state students would rather be in Austin. High SAT folks would rather be at Rice. Vet students would rather be at A&M.

So I am not sure how that improves your argument that A&M is somehow going to be more relevant. Other than the argument that no one else buys that it is better to be third place in the SEC West than first place in the Pac12 South.

If you scroll back, I clearly say that I don't want to resume it.

Texas A&M is top 10 in the country in endowments now. We are one of the best in the world for putting people into the Energy industry too. We have a host of extremely strong programs. If you think we are some farm school with a few bright spots in chicken raising and some niche engineering, guess again. Our ranking is skewed by the fact we invest little into our liberal arts areas. They are basically second rate citizens on campus. I could go on and on but frankly, I don't really feel the need to impress you, nor do you really want to hear it.

Think of it this way. Our former student base is huge, and we have invested heavily in building tier one facilities and everything you may want or need to build a Top 5 football program. There is nothing you are lacking here and our budgets outweigh most anyone. We have committed to winning, not just being content with pretty good like in the past.

The third place SEC team gets way more national exposure than the second best West Coast team. That isn't debatable, just PAC Network distribution vs the SEC Network can prove that.
But that isn't even the point. The point is that being the third or even fourth best SEC team is 10x better than being third in the Big 12.

I'd like to hear you defend your post. In 1997 A&M was ranked 48th among national universities in USN&W Report. In 2014 they were 68th.
No argument from me that rankings can be useless and skewed but the idea that A&M has made some big noticeable jump in academic reputation isn't really supported by many facts.
Great supportive alumni base, and solid as hell down the line. Just as it was 20 years ago.

Size of the enrollment has basically doubled (which helps with the PUF), size of endowments, size of research monies, establishment of campus' abroad in both Tel Aviv, Israel (only U.S. university to have a campus in Israel..we are doing tech sharing with them) as well as Qatar. The Bush School of Intl Affairs is very good and new as well. The skew will likely come from idiot neocon statements by politicians which punished A&M, the acceptance rate skew (which is frustrating because despite the appearance of a high rate, it's much harder to get in now), and the fact we don't give a shite about liberal arts. A&M grads make more than UT grads on average, thats been posted. I think it was a Stanford recruiting tool where they showed average salary after X years Stanford was obviously #1 but yeah. They also bought a law school like what..2 years ago? It was a lesser one but like anything, they are building it up but it has a rankings hit. This was because the leg didn't want to build another one so like other places (Michigan St. buying Detroit Law School etc), we bought one. In terms of real world employment etc., we are significantly better off. We have one of the best ROIs, being both fairly affordable to most other schools while also giving most of our students, especially in STEM and business great careers. I really don't have the time to flesh all of that out to be honest, but that would be my assessment. It's much better for employment and opportunities in general than ever before.

A&M and Texas are the only two programs in the state that matter. Period. No amount of TCU/Baylor/Tech etc. winning or A&M/Texas losing will ever change that.
Pretty stupid to say that aggie, when everyone knows that TCU and Baylor would have beaten you last year and this coming year.
TCU returns 10 starters on Offense and 6 on Defense, they would crush you like a bug.

Good grief, Mr. Kool Aid, I'd bet my bottom dollar you were (or are) one of those whooping Corps turds who have an affinity for grabbing penis.
Did daddy make you join the Corps so you could play Army like pappy?
