@CecilHurt: Gregg Marshall will make $3.3 million annually to stay at Wichita State. Short of Alabama offer, but impressive. HT @GaryParrishCBS
he took less money to stay at a mid major than coach at Bama

They couldn't get Marshall. Could they get Jay Wright or Jamie Dixon? Maybe. If I were battle, I would've reached out to both of those coaches. Those are probably the only three "available" coaches that could command that type of salary.

He's making more money than 11 coaches in the SEC.

fricking lol @ Bama.
I find it funny that the fans laughing the most all hired coaches who were fired at their most recent jobs.

I agree, but can they go that high again with everyone knowing what the offered Marshall?
Bama needs to get a lower tier coach that can build that program again. They were a very good team in the mid 00's

They don't need a lower tier coach. They have money to burn on basketball. They made $8M profit I think on just men's basketball. If they want to burn that money, they can.

This is the thing, they pay 3M to a coach how soon do you want him in the NCAAs?
They can burn all the money they want on a coach, but next year is lost. By the 3rd year that 3M a year coach needs to be in the NCAAs.

Man I wish bama had gotten him. Time for sec to own bball too. Marshall has too sweet of a gig to leave for anything but a top 10 job. His job security is great. Imo it is kind of beta to stay there long term knowing you won't build a truly elite program. When we got Beilema I didn't think oh man that's exactly the coach I had in mind but I was sold on him simply because he left a comfy position where he knew he wouldn't win big and came to Arkansas. He knew the odds were unbelievably stacked against him but if he was really great he'd be able to have a top 5 program and play in the biggest spotlight. That was ballsy.

The SEC is becoming another arms race in BBall. As much as I hate to say UK is bring challengers in. Coaches are flocking to knock him off too.
Posted on 4/2/15 at 12:28 am to TunaTigers
They are flocking because the SEC is flush and able to pay their bball coaches with house money now. Everyone woke up and was like damn we got a shite ton of money, access to the best athletes in the country, the best reputation in college sports and we are letting Rick ray and Tony barbee, etc piss all over our brand. Not to mention the sec has been wide open. The hogs were average this year and won almost 30 games.

Boy I hope so. If Marshall is worth 4.5, Archie is worth 3.

I don't get all the hate on Alabama right now. They were in this..if Wichita didn't pony up the money then I think he would of gone to Bama. His family also wanting to stay in Shocker nation was obviously a big factor as well.
I think it's absurd to say a coach can't win at Alabama or any other SEC school not named Kentucky or Florida. It may be a little more difficult to get the big name athletes, but it's starting to gradually happen. Bringing in all these big name coaches will help tremendously. They are not going to play second fiddle to any school and the big name recruits will start coming in.
The SEC culture in basketball is starting to change and i'm happy to see this. Alabama went big, and it didn't pan out but at least they threw everything they could throw at him. Kudos to them

Yay for cherry picked points.

Wichita st is a mid major. Check
Wichita offered less money than bama was offering. Check
He chose to stay at Wichita St. Check
Do you disagree with any of the above?
I don't see how I cherry picked anything. That is quite literally what happened. If anything, you're cherry picking. Or at least arguing over technicalities. All I did was point out an obvious fact.

I don't care who Bama gets now, as long as we get Orgeron.
