Sarah Patterson's Legacy

Bama Gymnastics just put out a video I assume they showed when honoring Sarah Patterson last Friday. I still think she's probably one of the greatest people to ever coach here at UA with Bryant and Stallings.

Pretty incredible stuff. Good prep for anyone watching them head to Athens and UGA this Friday.
Alabama has only won in Athens twice since 2005... and are the favorites for the first time in a while. Here's to wrecking the gym dawgs this week in the house that Yoculan built!

I'm glad she did so well here, but it's still just gymnastics.

She's done wonders for UA. Great ambassador, great person, and was a great coach. Wish she could have went out winning a last natty

Is the raised right fist kind of her signature? Great woman, leader and coach. Started the program with only an old wrestling mat. Truly rags to riches program and she deserves all the credit.

I never said anyone could do it. I said it's just gymnastics. It's the bottom of the totem pole.

or it's our #2 attended sport by average... i'd like to hear what you've done for UA athletics that is worth a hill o' beans???

Because they win. Our fans would pack out Coleman for a chess match if we were good at it. In the sports world, gymnasics is ignored except for two weeks every four years. Hell, they don't even show the gymnastics national championships live on TV.

That's just dumb and stupid. Our women's tennis won a NC last year - what was their average attendance? How many people went to our golf team's matches? Your standard for what drives support is pretty far off base

UCLA won the NC last year.

Probably not many since almost all of them are out of state.
It's the same thing with softball. You think they would sell out every year if they weren't constantly in the top 10? With the exception of football, our fans just flock to which ever sport is winning. Coleman will easily fill up when basketball is good, baseball fills up when they are good. It's hard to get our fans to show up to any sport besides football when we aren't very good.
ETA: I don't know anyone that went to the golf national tournament, but I know a ton of people that were following both the men's and women's tournaments online.

I understand you logic, but not your attitude.... so what if a sport isn't universally popular? We love gymnastics and softball because on the day we can kick anyone's arse in it.... and there's nothing wrong with admiring and respecting the athletes and coaches that make it happen.
Or in the case of Sarah and Patrick Murphy... built it out of nothing. I almost think Murph is a little more impressive since Sarah starter her program about the same time EVERY school started theirs. Murph began in 1997 from nothing in a world with already established blue bloods out there and made a championship program anyways.

Some Bama fans have a real problem with the support we give gymnastics and softball.
I always picture them as old coots complaining about people going to watch "girl sports".
Sarah Patterson is on the Bama Athletics Mount Rushmore.

I'd probably be considered an "old coot" by many on this site, but I agree that Sarah Patterson deserves every accolade given her. And, as a Bama fan, I always pull for the Tide in EVERY sport - whether it's the guys or gals competing.
Here's a thought: will we ever see ladies' college football, or men's gymnastics?

We'd have to add another women's sport. Lacrosse is pretty cheap... but Men's Soccer and Men's Wrestling are probably first in line.
