Obviously, this was prior to the beginning of the NIT and NCAA tournaments, however, the top team of the year in that era was selected by consensus among sportswriters. In 1930, Alabama went 20-0 winning the Southern Conference (predecessor of the SEC and ACC) and being named the top team in the Premo-Porretta rankings. That same year, Pittsburgh (23-2) was selected in the Helms rankings. Since teams from different sections of the country rarely played one another and even played under significantly different rules in some cases, it is difficult to reach a consensus pick, but Alabama seems to have as good a claim as anyone to the title in 1930.

They converted it into half of a football national championship or 3 gymnastics championships.

Our best was 1976, the year Indiana went 32-0. They had no seeds back then, Alabama #6 UNC #5 Marqeutte #2 and Indiana #1 in the polls all played in Baton Rouge.

Bama crushed UNC by 15, I think Indiana and Marquette had byes, at that time there were only 48 teams in the tourney.

We played Indiana next, close game al the way, led by one point with 2 minutes left and had the ball behind by one with under 30 seconds left, lost 74-69 I think, had to foul twice at the end. No other team got within 9 ( Marquette ) but every other team lost by 15 plus including Michigan in the National title game. We was good.
