And the rest of the LB's have been severely underdeveloped.
Maybe this is Thompson's fault and maybe it isn't, but it's his position group, so he is the first head to roll.

Don't think that hasn't crossed my mind the last couple of years. Seriously, I've seen the secondary and LB corps fall off some and it drove me to drink on multiple occassions this season.
It will be hard to correct the secondary problems due to who coaches them. I do not think Saban would focus on another position.

Last time Lance Thompson left Saban and Alabama for one of Alabama's rivals, Alabama's recruiting and success on the field really suffered while the rival achieved tremendous success. Saban needs Thompson - this is a big loss for Bama.
Thompson was at UT for the 2010, 2011, and 2012 classes.
Alabama's classes were ranked, 5, 1, and 1.
Tennessee's were ranked 9, 13, and 17.

We could have let Smart go as well.

Saban is involved but the secondary took a drop after Pruitt left and Kirby took over. Word is Kirby will move back to LBs and we will hire a secondary coach.
Either way, I think the secondary issues are a combination of (1) youth/inexperience (2) talent compared to prior year (3) scheme. A bad combination of those 3 spells disaster for a scheme like ours. We will see if it improves next year. It should, but at this point I'm not confident.

And may I compliment SummerOfGeorge and IronsPuppet for having a logical/constructive discussion. Nice change of pace for the board.

Remember when Lance left for Knoxville and said he'd build a fence around Memphis and less than 12 hours later we signed the #1 prospect in Tennessee?
Oh yes. And for those who have forgotten, Scarbinsky, of all people, is there to remind us.
"here's what Saban did do:
He hopped Lance Thompson's fence before Thompson put the first post in the ground.
Securing Alabama's first commitment for the class of 2010 from Memphis, right after Thompson vowed that Tennessee was going to put up a fence around the city, ran counter to the theory that, for Saban, it's not personal, it's just business."
"Just don't expect Thompson to do it.
As a fence-builder, he leaves a lot to be desired."

A team of 5* with sub par coaching will win but will not be a NC quality team.
From a distance that seems to be what has happened to Bama the last couple of years.
We all thought that the players had got the big head. Could have some of the staff joined them.
The strength coach needs to look in the mirror too.

Is this because Reuben Foster never developed?

Go down the line. Our LB's (outside of Moseley and Ragland) have been pretty dang disappointing since the 2011 group ended. Maybe it's scheme, maybe it's development, but at some point we had to change things up. Thompson is an elite recruiter, but he has always been known as a middle of the pack LB coach. And he's been with us 3 times in 20 years so we should know.

bamers who keep comparing this situation to Tennessee are just fricking idiots. Auburn obviously has a much better head coach and a much more proven defensive coordinator

At the time, Monte Kiffin as Tennessee DC was as homerun as it got. That was a coup. Regardless, Alabama has dealt with Steele and Thompson leaving before. I think they'll survive.

Like most kids (including my own) when you yell/scream/chatter in their ear all the time they eventually just tune it out. The skull becomes numb with all the white noise.

Proven 20 years ago. His own son canned him at USC.

His 2009 defense at Tennessee was incredibly good. And, at that time (the time period we are discussing) he was a legend who wasn't yet senile.

I think they existed when Kirkpatrick and Millner were there, the SEC just hasn't had QBs to exploit it. Look at who Bama has lost to over the last 5 years, mainly to QBs that could throw.

The secondary also took a drop when they started playing smaller CBs.
2011:
Kirkpatrick, 6'3, 192
Menzie, 6'0, 198
Milliner, 6,1, 196
2014:
Jones, 5'10, 194
Jackson, 6'0, 188
Sylve, 5'11, 180

Probably true... That's also when the Tampa 2 still worked in CFB.
