Believe it or not, it was pronounced "axe" for a long time.

I'll try to find the "word" origin article I read awhile back and link it.

I've got a bad habit of using this word ironically far too often. I've caught myself almost saying it at inappropriate times. The black folks have it figured out in this area, rolls off the tongue way easier.
