Question about Sugar Bowl for Bama fans...

I did not have a chance to watch the game (except for gamecast on ESPN.com) so I cannot make an educated assumption, but do you think offensive play calling cost you the game? I'm sure there were lots of things that could have been done better, but it seems like there were some costly mistakes due to passing the ball when yall should have been running it down Ohio State's throat.
I was pulling for you guys to take home the win, and the championship. I was just wondering your take on the situation.

No, Ohio State executing their gameplan better on both sides of the ball was the difference in the game.

I think Kiffin was a bit more pass happy, yes. But ultimately, OSU played better on both sides of the ball and was the better team.

Combination of things...
First off let me say that tOSU deserved that win and they were the better team. I don't want this to be misconstrued into a "bama beat themselves" schtick.
Kiffin made some questionable play calls especially given that Blake was in road Blake form. The most questionable one to me was after the short punt when we called a long pass to OJ Howard that ended up getting intercepted. Why were we in such a hurry to score?
3rd and Smart also killed us.

It was a good play call, Blake just didn't make a good throw. He leads OJ and puts it where only OJ could catch it, and it's either a TD or an incomplete pass.
It's pretty common after a momentum shifting play to go for the jugular.

Blake wasn't having his best game, that's for sure. With that said, I think Alabama should have run the ball a lot more since the run was pretty successful. After OSU's bad punt in the 4th, I really wanted Alabama to run it down their throats to tie the game, but Blake threw a bad INT on the first play. That really deflated things.
More than that though, bad third down defense was the difference. The pattern of stuffing Ohio State on downs one and two and then getting gashed on third down was frustrating. Ohio State made some great third down plays that were hard to defend, but just a couple of stops on third and long could have made the difference.

Play calling absolutely cost us the game. Henry was averaging 8 yards a carry (consistent with little variance, not just because of one big run) and he only got it like 12 times? If we feed him more we don't have as many 3 and outs, and perhaps by throwing less, fewer interceptions.

I agree it was a good call on paper, but it didn't take into account that Road Blake was in full form.

Alabama had at least 3 chances to take the lead in the game with the job their punter was doing. Ohio State was pinned in their own 5 like three drives in a row. It did not look like the pound and ground Eddie Lacy-Trent Richardson Alabama to me. It looked like Lane Kiffin trying to be cute calling for an average quarterback to make big plays with the game on the line. Henry seemed to be pounding it just fine.

The defense couldn't get off the field. Same thing happened in the Auburn and Oklahoma games the year before. Our 3rd down defense has failed us on several occasions over the last few years...but that's a topic for another thread.

It was exactly that, and Blake more times than not delivered this season. He didn't in the Sugar Bowl. Some of that was bad throws/reads, and some of that was the OL not giving him enough time.

It is only a good call if you have a QB that can consistently make that throw.

OSU just beat us. Sure, there were several areas where, if any one of them had been better, Bama probably wins. Offensive playcalling was a little soft, Sims didn't play particularly well, the defense didn't stop much of anything in the first half, etc. etc. On the other hand, if we don't have next years heisman, JK Scott, punting, we might have lost by 2 or 3 scores.
Honestly, I just don't think this was a "great" Bama team. Good, but more weaknesses than usual.

I disagree - if you look on the other side of that - LSU has abandoned the pass and that has not exactly been successful
Or maybe it was the pass has abandoned LSU - I dont know, actually I am not sure I even know what a pass is after this season.
But - seriously - watching Blake this year - have to admit, kid has done a pretty good job and has progressed very well.

And Blake had shown all season he could make that throw. He didn't Thursday night. It happens. Most Bama fans have accepted it and moved on.
It was a good play call and was executed well up until the throw. OJ had a the guy beat by a yard or so. Blake puts the ball high and outside towards the pileon, and it's not intercepted. He put it low and inside and it was intercepted.

Urban had his guys ready to play and they simply wanted it more. They were the better team that night. Bama was running the ball effectively. Can't explain why Kiffin/Saban went away from it.
ETA: the defense didn't play well, either. However, t wasn't surprising because the secondary has been suspect all season.

He did a great job this year. Really happy his career progressed to where he became the starting QB for Alabama, won an SEC championship, made the playoff, made some all-SEC lists, etc. He struggled a bit against OSU, but that shouldn't take away from the great progression he made from scout team RB to starting QB at Bama.
