Please tell us about this great recent history of the atm program.
59-0?
0-4 vs LSU since 96?
77-0?
Sanctions?
How far do we want to go back?

Well, they have been winning bowl games, something LSU has rarely done in the same time frame.

I admit Chavis + AnM is an odd mix. I wont miss 3rd down with him anymore. The Gigs think this is a win because their defense has been putrid, they look at LSU and say "I wish we were in the Peach Bowl"
The LSU envy is hilarious.

College Station has to be a lot safer than Baton Rouge. We all can agree on this aspect.

Is he a ex military guy? Maybe the military culture of Texas AM appears to him. I think AM is a lot better university too. More intellectuals go there. LSU seems like a 4 year party school.
Whether this is a factor or not, I commend your reasoning.

Right well I am pretty sure we have won more bole games that BU and AnM in the last decade.

Money was a factor, but the term of the contract was the primary reason. Most assistant coaches have only a one year contract, but top coordinators often get a two year deal so that they've got a year's pay waiting if the head coach gets canned. Means that they don't have to take the first job that comes along.
LSU wasn't willing to give Chavis any guarantee beyond one year--their proposal said it was for three years, but had an out if Miles was no longer head coach. That's not consistent with the market, so Chavis took the money, and the guarantee (3 years, even more than the 2 big time coordinators get) that A&M was offering.
^This. Alleva made a fundamental error in misunderstanding Chavis. There was no way in hell he was going to have that kind of clause near the end of his career. A clause like that could've left him without pay and a job if Miles left or was fired and it would have done so right at his prime earning years when he was saving for retirement.
After what ex-AD Mike Hamilton did to Fulmer - forcing him to 'retire' midseason - there was no way in hell Chavis would leave himself exposed like Alleva was asking in that contract. I honestly don't understand how Alleva failed to get that.

kinda the other way around. He wasn't worth the additional stipulations he wanted

Maybe the AD is setting the stage to hire a new head coach after another sub par year in 15, and wanted to limit his exposeur to paying coaches who no longer coach at LSU .

This sounds plausible.

This. These types of threads show how few people here are familiar with contract negotiations. The way this went down was most definitely not Chavis telling LSU to frick off but was most certainly vice versa. Now whether that was a mistake on LSU's part or not remains to be seen.

this. LSU dug it's heels in. pretty much the first time they have done so in the miles era. whether this was a message to chavis or miles (or both) is undetermined. I believe miles was with alleva on this deal but don't know for certain. whether or not it is a good move or not remains to be seen but if LSU can continue to recruit similar talent I believe it will be.
chavis is who he is. he hasn't changed during his career. he likes small front 7's and that's what really hurt us the last 2 years. yes, our offense sucked this year but not the 2 previous years. I guess the adm. thought he wasn't worth ponying up to keep him.
