I'm sure he's right, and probably not just the Mid South.
I heard Pinkel talk about trying to recruit in the state of Texas in the early days. Said the HS HCs would keep him and staff from talking to the best recruits. Said, they were reserved for Texas, A&M, OU. He could recruit the next tier. That changed after Chase Daniel.

So it's like STL.

once a player has finished his Senior year in HS, his coach can basically do squat to stop him from going wherever he wants. Of course I know some of these kids look up to their coach like their daddy, but nobody can stop a school from sending a kid an offer letter to his house. These HS coaches are not the gestapo, even if they want to be.

Kids usually commit before they leave HS. And the coach plays a huge part in that. That's the reality of it. In theory, anything can happen. In reality, a kid from Rockhurst is far less likely to go to Mizzou.

Can live with this.
I really would have liked Pelini. But with all the crap flying around him and it appears he has accepted a HC job at Youngstown, it appears it all worked out for the best.
Odom is a good safe choice.

yea i know, but that wouldn't stop a school from contacting that player, and if you can get him to visit you can flip him. Anything CAN happen.

Memphis paper seems to think Odom to Mizzou
like Arky St, Memphis is a nice stepping stone program, Odom is definitely bound for a bigger job, somewhere. But then, the same seems certain for Kuligowski. One of the important points is that Odom can obviously coach Linebackers, and Kul may or may not leave, depending on what kind of promotion he is offered. It's easy to draw the conclusion the job is at least partly Odoms to decline.
“There’s a lot of stuff out there, but I think the most important thing is that I take care of this (Memphis) team."
makes it sound like a "lot of stuff" is agents on the line.

Odom is better than a "safe choice". He's one of the hottest young coordinators in all of CFB. What he's done at Memphis is truly astounding. We were just very fortunate there was a connection there. Love the hire.
RE: Kul I just can't imagine that Pinkel wouldn't have made sure he was good with this before doing it. I'm sure he'll be getting a nice pay bump and possibly a new title. GP knows how important this guy is.

We'll see.
I don't mind the hire. I'll hold my excitement until after he's had some time DCing in the SEC. I hope it does work out as a great hire.

He did DC against Ole Miss this year. Score was 7-3 going into the 4th quarter.

Both Florida and MSU tried to land him. He must have been good enough for them.

I don't know that they seriously looked at him but his name was bantied about with A&M, SC and Auburn too. Read some Memphis fans who thought Fuente might head to Nebraska at the time and they wanted Odom to take over as HC there. He's definitely developed a resume. So has Kul and I just hope they do what they have to in order to keep him happy.

Memphis could be 11-1 this year. No offense at all agaisnt Ole Miss. But UCLA and Houston were games lost in the last 5 minutes. The UCLA game neither teams D showed up. All the wins by Memphis were Defense generated.

That game was also in a stretch when OM really had the offense rolling. It was a 7 game stretch where they were held under 30 only twice. Bama and Memphis.
I mean, of course, we don't know how it will work out but (realistically) I don't see how we could have gotten a guy with a better resume.

What was the final score in that game? Not trying to steal anyones thunder, he will probably do fine. I just commented that I'll hold my excitement of the hire until he's had a full year in the SEC. Thats much different than a single game against one team. I hope he does field great defenses. But being in the SEC for a full season will give other teams a chance to gameplan against his scheme. We'll see.

24-3 was the final. I didn't see the game, but my guess is that depth and superior athletes got them in the 4th quarter.

That would probably do it. Still not bad for a one game deal and probably less depth and level of players.

That and the fact that the 2 OM touchdown drives in the 4th quarter started on the Memphis 23 and the Memphis 24. Add to that the Memphis offense didn't keep them off the field in the 2nd half:
8 plays punt 2:53
3 plays punt 1:03
3 plays punt 1:16
3 plays punt 1:07
3 plays fumble 0:59
3 plays punt 1:21
6 plays punt 1:28
Total time of possession was like 40 minutes to 20 minutes
