I think Pelini would be a great hire. plus that would absolutely lock the davis twins to Mizzou but that's just a side bonus

Wow crazy, but getting whipped on defense in both SEC title games...

Barry Odom Bio
If he gets it, it could actually help Mizzou on the recruiting front.
Clipped from his Bio...
quote:
A valuable part of Missouri's operations staff starting in 2003, Odom showed his versatility when he jumped into recruiting responsibilities in December of 2008 to fill the void when former assistant Dave Christensen left to become head coach at Wyoming after the Tigers' 2008 Alamo Bowl victory. Odom's hard work and personable nature helped secure the signings of several in-state standouts, as well as getting a late commitment from Louisiana's L'Damian Washington. He was also the lead recruiter on a handful of signees with Missouri's 2010 recruiting class which was ranked 21st nationally by Rivals.com, the highest-ranked class in Tigers history.

That's a really, really weird choice for him to make.
Why? If he wants to be a head coach, realistically that's about as good a job as he is gonna be offered.
It's not like he's set the football world on fire in 20+ years as coach and his stock isn't going to get any higher at Mizzou, with the system that Pinkel insists on running.

Promote Kul, or go get Barry Odom?
Good God are we really limited to this small choice of options?
Of course, given who is hiring, those will be the two choices, if not promoting Ford or his nephew instead.

Why? It's a shitty job and likely won't even result in a raise.
Odom would be a great hire. Not sure why that upsets you, and we obviously need to do whatever we have to do to keep Kul happy.

So you would rather hire someone without Mizzou roots?
If Odom is as good as his resume / track record he could be the HC-in-waiting or at least on the list.

Dave Morrison story on the reports and potential replacements. LINK
quote:
At $600,000, Steckel is the highest-paid coach on Pinkel's staff, but sources told the News-Leader that the coach would be willing to take a pay cut for a chance at his first head-coaching job.
Steckel was at Missouri's bowl practice Saturday morning and sitting with some of the Tigers' recruiting targets at the Xavier-Missouri basketball game Saturday afternoon.
"I have no comment on that," Steckel said at the basketball game. "I haven't even been on their campus."
Two logical candidates to replace Steckel would be current Missouri defensive line coach Craig Kuligowski and Memphis defensive coordinator Barry Odom.
Kuligowski, who has been on Pinkel's staffs at Toledo and Missouri for the past 23 seasons, has seen six of his former linemen go in the NFL Draft in the past six years, including three first-rounders.
SEC sack leader Shane Ray is a probable first-round pick this season, and Markus Golden should also go in the first few rounds. Missouri ranks sixth in the nation with 42 sacks this season.
Odom makes $372,113 at Memphis, according to the USA Today assistant coach salaries database. A former Missouri linebacker, he's seventh on the Tigers' all-time tackles list and coached on Pinkel's staff in different capacities from 2003 to 2011, serving as safeties coach the final three years before going to Memphis.
Memphis' defense has gone from 117th in the FBS in yards allowed per game to 22nd in Odom's three years in charge.
Steckel would be the sixth assistant coach to leave in Pinkel's 14 years at Missouri, following offensive coordinator Dave Christensen, Eberflus, Odom, offensive coordinator David Yost and co-offensive line coach Bruce Walker, who retired from coaching last summer.
A former Marine, Steckel got his degree from Kutztown in 1982 and started his coaching career as a graduate assistant of Miami (Ohio) in 1992.

Doubt it. So throw out other names. Those are just the two most immediate and obvious choices.
Who do you want to see?

Pelini and Pinkel won't get along.

and yet it's as good as he could expect to get,, so what does that tell you?

Odom would be a great hire.
while that's purely subjective, it's certainly unlikely he would be any worse than Stec or Eberflus, and since he knows Mizzou/Pinkels program it would be an easy transition.
Who would I rather have? Muschamp.
Since we would be in line behind AU, A&M and likely SC as well, I realize it would almost never happen, but well, since you asked.
Unlike Kiffin who has basically stepped in at Bama and kept his trap shut, I see no chance Peelini could manage not being the loose canon that he is. So while he would be an upgrade as a coach, would rather not upset the chemistry in the current staff.
Given Pinkel likes to promote from within, let's hope Kul has the football mind he seems to possess, of the current position coaches he does seem to be the clear choice.

I guess I should have said realistic option other than Kul or Odom.
There surely are others. I just have no clue. Muschamp isn't an option. That I do know.

Lol, Auburn already hired Muschamp and is paying him about 3 times what we paid Steckel.
All he is would be a bigger name. Odom has made great progress with the defense at Memphis.

the reason for that is because he is proven as a top DC. While Mizzou's D has had a "good year", it's hardly the case that Mizzou is a consistently top defense.
Muschamp would be the clear best choice, if we could get him, which I know we can't.

Hire Odom because he can do more with less. Give Kul a big raise and tell him he only answers to HCGP. Groom Odom to be the next HC

are you Gary Pinkel?

I feel like I can say with a fair amount of certainty that his replacement will likely be someone none of us expect, and possibly someone we've never heard of.

Great chance to get someone who can recruit. please don't waste this opportunity with a bullshite hire please!!!

Going to war in the SEC? Give me Pelini. Guy has been there done that. His track record proves it. Look through the fog of his firing, and he still had good seasons with NU as a HC. As a DC with LSU, his defenses ranked 3rd in the nation 3 years straight and won an SEC conference title with his defenses. He's a big turnover type coach. I think his defenses were known for that. He has also coached at different levels, so he has that contact. I think he is a decent recruiter also. Coming back to the SEC as a DC and building a dominant defense in the best conference in the country might be appealing to him. Especially when you're going to a team that will be in the market for a HC not far down the road.
No disrespect to Odom. But I don't think he has that kind of pedigree. If HCGP is serious about winning some championships, he'll be talking to Bo. If not, business as usual.
