What exactly was the tension/dislike between Malzahn and Nutt? Seems like if Nutt hired him to be a coordinator, he would let him do his thing. I remember the time frame and what eventually happened, but I don't remember the story.....if there was one that ever came out. Please provide me with some color on that if you will.

Nutt hired Malzahn for recruits, Malzahn thought he could run the offense for the whole season, Nutt Disagreed.

nutt was pressured to give him the job so he could get malzahn's high school players. i think nutt resented that and well others can give you more info.

So, basically, they told Malzahn what he needed to hear to get him and his players there, and once they were, Nutt did whatever he wanted.

I seem to remember there being a lot of discord between the parents/recruits of the kids Gus brought to Arky and Nutt and his staff. This may have been after Gus left. Just remember tailgating in a guys yard in Fayetteville that worked for the University bitching about the QB's mom being a total bitch and whack job.

I think Nutt was something of a moron, especially later in his career.

One of the hogs will have to confirm this, but I think there was a bunch of friction on the staff as well. Guys called Gus "high school" and basically undercut him.

quote:Bingo. Nutt, Murray State Mafia, and Herring (then DC) did everything possible to take credit away from Malzahn and referred to him as "that High School Coach" to some of the local media. I can't blame him for leaving after 1 year......so did the Springdale players!!

you can look at it that way or you can think that malzahn used his players to get the job in the first place. this was mitch mustain the greatest 5 star qb of all time we're talking about here
and his teammates.
if we're to believe that gus is intelligent then we should all believe that gus knew good and well why he was hired and should not have been surprised at all when things went down as they did.

Mitch Mustain's mom was a whole different level of weird and not really related the Nutt and Gus thing IMO.
Most Arkansas fans that don't like him is because of his time as a High School Coach, same for the ones that love him.

Yep that's part of it. I always wished Gus would have told his side of the story, but I understand why he didn't. Nutt was an egomaniac. I don't think he could handle the success and recognition that Gus brought. It was pretty obvious that Gus never installed his offense and Nutt took over play calling about week 8-9 of that season.

Wasn't there some kind of meeting between the parents and the AD where they were making demands of some sort?

yeah there was something like that- it was pure insane drama the whole time gus was here be it other's (nutt's, crazy parents, broyles) fault or not.
no one believes me but that is still and will always be the lowest point in my hog fandom. idiotic fans on both sides, making banners, filing foi inquires, bitching bitching and more bitching constantly.

It's similar to when Tuberville hired Tony Franklin in some ways. Hired him, wouldn't allow him to bring his own assistants and the assistants he had in place wouldn't do what he wanted. It will cause a program to collapse on itself.
ETA - I think when all of that was going on was the first and only time I went to Hogville....tis a scary place

What piggilicious said ... The entire thing was a complete clusterfrick with many different dynamics & overblown egos involved.

Totally possible he knew that it was part of it, but also was confident in his abilities and expected to have whatever role was promised for himself and his players. He arrives, gets jilted by a bunch of folks who are in actuality pretty worthless, and naturally gets disgruntled.

i'm sure he was disgruntled, the whole state was.
there was just too much 'poor gus' for me at the time. i wanted them all gone and a clean slate.

Mustain's mom was the ultimate helicopter parent. And thought her son was god's gift to football

Nutt didn't hire him.
If I remember correctly Nutt offered him a job as a position coach but he turned it down and then used Mustain, Damian Williams, and Ben Cleveland (Williams and Cleveland were Florida Commits) to get the offensive coordinator position.
The powers to be hired Malzahn and forced him on Nutt. Which started the problem.
It was destined to fail...two completely different offensive philosphies.

I wanted Nutt's arse fired after 2003. Then again after 2004 and then again after 2005.
And who do I know the villain is on this Nutt/Gus/Boosters thing from 2006? All of them.
Innocent Gus my arse.
